Are we headed for more counterprogramming on a Mexican holiday weekend?

There's precedent. When Canelo Alvarez fought Josesito Lopez on Mexican Independence Day weekend in 2012 (on Showtime), Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. competed against Sergio Martinez down the block on HBO PPV.

Now, there could be competition for the coveted Cinco De Mayo weekend slot in 2015.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya said that he plans to have Canelo fight in May.

"Canelo Alvarez gave me my marching orders and that is fighting in May of next year and September of next year so, as his promoter, I have to do whatever I can to make that happen for him," De La Hoya said. "If Canelo wants to fight in May, I will get him May, if I have to fight for it. I wasnt a 10-time world champ for nothing."

Of course, boxing's biggest pay-per-view attraction, Floyd Mayweather Jr., also plans to fight in May, as he has done for the past three years.

Canelo's first fight in 2014 will likely come against Miguel Cotto, as long as everything goes as planned. De La Hoya didn't rule out that bout in June if a deal is too good to pass up, but expect a lot of posturing come next year over the glamorous May date.

It could be a matter of who blinks first.
