New York - When Oscar De La Hoya regained control of his promotional company, Golden Boy Promotions, he made a promise to the fans. The promise was that he was willing to make the best fights and work with other promoters to do so.
“We had a vision, we have one goal and that’s to put the best against the best for the fans,” De La Hoya said to BoxingScene.com “Along with my partner Bernard Hopkins, we have accomplished Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto will be the most anticipated fight of the year, of the last recent years.”
When it comes to his flagship fighters, De La Hoya has held his world. Lucas Matthysse defeated Ruslan Provodnikov and is now going to take on Viktor Postol. David Lemiuex defeated Hassan N’dam and will now face Gennady Golovkin in a middleweight showdown on October 17. Canelo Alvarez knocked out James Kirkland and on November 21st will fight Miguel Cotto.
Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez will add to the long rich history of the rivalry that is Puerto Rico versus Mexico. De La Hoya was part of a Puerto Rico vs. Mexico mega-fight when he took on Felix ‘Tito’ Trinidad in 1999. De La Hoya feels the fight between Cotto and Canelo will be bigger and better.
“I remember a fight that I was involved in against Felix Trinidad,” said De La Hoya. “The last time we saw a passion, the last time we saw this hype, Mexico vs Puerto Rico. Now while I was Mexican-American with Mexican roots, the passion was felt throughout the globe. This fight here is bigger than that. This fight here will live up to that expectation when you face a Mexican and a Puerto Rican inside that ring. We are going to get an explosion. You will get a real fight.”
