Los Angeles, CA - Danny "Swift" Garcia, (32-0, 18 KOs) became a two-division world champion on Saturday night with a twelve round unanimous decision over Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero, (33-4, 18 KOs) to capture the vacant WBC welterweight title. Scores were 116-112 on all three judges' scorecard.
Garcia has since been ordered by the World Boxing Council to fight Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) in an immediate mandatory defense. The mandatory fight has to take place before the month of June.
Khan has been inactive since a victory last May over former champion Chris Algieri. A lot of time was wasted while Khan was attempting to secure big fights with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
At the moment Khan is looking to return on a March date with a stay busy fight to shake off the rust before pursing the mandatory bout with Garcia.
Khan and Garcia collided in a junior welterweight unification in 2012 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. After appearing to control the start of the fight, Khan got caught cold with a big left hand in the third round, went down and never recovered. Garcia dropped him three times before the fight was waved off in the fourth round. The win was Garcia's coming out party.
Garcia feels the fight is a bad idea - for Khan. He thinks Khan has been too inactive to go for a fight of that magnitude and needs to gain more activity before they fight again. If the rematch does come together, Garcia is very confident in his abilities to pull in a repeat victory.
"I don't have to fight nobody. He's been inactive for I believe a year. I don't think that's a good idea to fight an active fighter after being inactive for over a year. But like I said, I beat him once and I can beat him again," Garcia said.
