Daniel Jacobs: record, next fight and profile →
Last Saturday night, WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (26-0, 12 KOs) made a big statement when he dominated former IBF beltholder David Lemieux over twelve rounds. Lemieux, because of his feared power and because the fight was taking place in Canada, was viewed by some experts as a favorite to win.
Daniel Jacobs hopes Billy Joe Saunders will return to North America for his next fight, this time to New York to face him. Jacobs is likely to fight again April 28 at Barclays Center in his native Brooklyn and wants a shot at the British southpaw’s WBO middleweight title. Saunders’ willingness to travel to Quebec to defend his title against Montreal’s David Lemieux gives Jacobs and his handlers some confidence he’ll seriously consider defending his championship against Jacobs in Brooklyn.
Middleweight contender Daniel Jacobs (33-2, 29 KOs) is a very interested party in the outcome of Saturday's clash between WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders and challenger David Lemieux. The contest takes place on home soil for Lemieux, at Place Bell in Laval, Quebec, Canada. Saunders (25-0, 12 KOs) vs. Lemieux (38-3, 33 KOs) will be headline an HBO televised tripleheader.
WBO middleweight Billy Joe Saunders (25-0, 12 KOs) is scratching his head as to why Daniel Jacobs (33-2, 29 KOs) is being praised by some experts for a twelve round unanimous decision loss to WBC, WBA, IBO, IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs). Jacobs was a big underdog in the fight and many expected him to get knocked out - especially since prior to that contest Golovkin had knocked out 23 opponents in a row.
Former super welterweight champion Austin "No Doubt" Trout agrees with the observers who thought Gennady "GGG" Golovkin deserved the win against Canelo Alvarez in September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight ended up being scored a draw and the verdict was split among fans and experts alike with many believing Golovkin had done enough to win and some feeling that Canelo had edged out the fight while others believed that the draw was the right call.
Former WBA 'regular' middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (33-2, 29 KOs) is confident and has no doubt that he would win a rematch, if it ever happens, with IBF, IBO, WBC, WBA 'super' champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs). Golovkin and Jacobs collided back in March. Jacobs was dropped in the fourth round, but came back swinging hard to make the contest very close before a packed crowd at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Former WBA 'regular' middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (33-2, 29 KOs) maintains that he was rightful winner of the March encounter with IBF, IBO, WBC, WBA 'super' champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs). Jacobs was dropped in the fourth round, but came back swinging hard to make the contest very close before a packed crowd at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Eddie Hearn hopes Billy Joe Saunders defeats David Lemieux on December 16. Despite his contentious relationship with Frank Warren, Saunders’ promoter, Hearn knows Saunders would welcome a trip to Brooklyn to battle Daniel Jacobs, as long as the money is right. If Lemieux wins, Hearn suspects it’ll be more difficult to get him to fight Jacobs next.
Ratings for HBO’s “World Championship Boxing” tripleheader Saturday night reflected direct boxing competition on ESPN. According to ratings released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research, Daniel Jacobs’ easy victory Luis Arias drew a peak audience of 765,000 viewers and averaged 706,000. Milwaukee’s Arias (18-1, 9 KOs) wasn’t willing to engage during much of his 12-round defeat to Brooklyn’s Jacobs (33-2, 29 KOs), the best opponent of his five-year pro career.
Daniel Jacobs’ manager has refuted trainer John David Jackson’s claims that Jacobs weighed “180, 185” pounds and as a cruiserweight had an unfair advantage over Luis Arias in their middleweight fight Saturday night. Keith Connolly, Jacobs’ manager, took issue with Jackson’s comments following Jacobs’ easy unanimous-decision victory over Arias in their 12-round fight (https://www.boxingscene.com/jackson-jacobs-cruiserweight-an-unfair-advantage--122387). HBO televised Jacobs-Arias as the main event of a “World Championship Boxing” tripleheader from Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, but Jacobs out-classed Arias in what was a significant step up in competition for the middleweight from Milwaukee.
