Former super welterweight champion Austin "No Doubt" Trout agrees with the observers who thought Gennady "GGG" Golovkin deserved the win against Canelo Alvarez in September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The fight ended up being scored a draw and the verdict was split among fans and experts alike with many believing Golovkin had done enough to win and some feeling that Canelo had edged out the fight while others believed that the draw was the right call.
Trout, who lost a close decision to Alvarez in 2013, was a little bit surprised at the credit Canelo received from the judges for his defensive work against Golovkin.
"I have only watched it once but I thought Triple G won the fight. I have heard from some of my boxing friends who say to re-watch it. A lot of them too were like nah Triple G won 8-4 but they are like re-watch it and get a different look at it. Turn the music down. I haven't done that but I thought Triple G won the fight. It is funny that the defense of Canelo was able to put the rounds in because that usually doesn't work," said Trout.
The 32-year-old Trout also has a different opinion than most on who is the top dog in the middleweight division. While most observers have either Golovkin or Canelo ranked at the top, Trout feels that Danny Jacobs deserves that spot.
Jacobs lost a razor think decision to Golovkin in March and recently signed a multi-fight deal with HBO so a rematch against Golovkin or fights against Alvarez, David Lemieux or Billy Joe Saunders could be on the horizon for the native New Yorker.
"I definitely think Danny Jacobs is in the running. If you are talking about Triple G being the best - I thought Danny beat him - and I thought Triple G beat Canelo. I would love to see Danny versus Triple G two or a Danny and Canelo fight. I am going with Danny Jacobs and I would love to see what Jermall is going to do at 160. That is a big dude. He is strong and I think he is going to do just fine but we have to wait and see," explained Jacobs.
