Reigning middleweight king and active promoter Miguel Cotto has struck a deal with Univision Puerto Rico to form "Boxeo Al Maximo," a new boxing series that will air on a recurring basis.
The intent of the series is to showcase rising prospects in Puerto Rico. A sampling of what the series has in store came last June on WAPA-TV, when prospects Felix Verdejo, Jose Pedraza and Jantony Ortiz were featured on TV as part of an undercard topped by Cotto's historic middleweight title-winning stoppage over Sergio Martinez in New York City.
“Boxeo Al Maximo is a new event concept that we design for the enjoyment of fans and bring the most exciting bouts and developing our prospects,” Cotto said in a press statement. “We are pleased to announce our partnership with Univision Puerto Rico who will broadcast our events and reach every household in Puerto Rico.”
The inaugural episode airs Saturday, February 14, featuring a one-week delay of this weekend's show in Carolina, Puerto Rico. The show is topped by Jose 'Wonder Boy' Lopez in an eight-round featherweight showdown versus Josean Figueroa.
“In Univision Puerto we are committed to the local production and sports. We are happy to be part of the Boxeo Al Maximo project together with Miguel Cotto Promotions.
We know that great prospects will perform in this new platform and will represent us globally very soon”, said Jaime Bauza, general manager of Univision Puerto Rico.
