I find it fascinating reading the opinions. Just wondering how some of these opinions are formed.
I personally like action fighters who are defensively responsible but who go into the ring looking to hurt guys and KO their opponents. I know this is seen as what "casual fans" are looking for in a fight. In this case I think the casuals are mostly right.
I can appreciate Floyd, Pernell Whitaker and a few others, just because they are so good at being defensive. But the idea that great boxing is "hit and don't get hit" holds true if the guy not getting hit is also able to mount an effective offense and able to hurt their opponent. No offense equals a boring fighter.
Bivol for instance basically just back pedals entire fights and stinks it up. His offense is weak and he doesn't carry much power. But some people here act like he is some all time great. I don't hate Bivol but I wouldn't buy a ppv for him alone.
I see people really disliking Benavidez. The guy at this point is almost single handedly making boxing exciting. He is fun to watch, beating guys up and not afraid to mix it up. I'd buy a ppv just for him. He is great to watch.
Is this all based on where people are from, like ethnic favoritism? I love any fighter who is a dog in the ring. I give more respect to fighters who come to do damage and ko guys.
How do you all form your opinions?
It’s petty but a r etarded fanbase can turn would be fans away from a fighter
Fanbases with zero historical context declaring their guy the goat when his record is far from it
the most recent fanbase being Oleksandr’s 3rd world ukrainies
TBud briefly with those afrocentric tribalists
manny’s paqturds again with the 3rd world education thinking
Those same people hated Bud with a passion when he was with Top Rank and didnt switch to Haymon.......
Fighting preference.
I dont care about race/nationality. I want action, suspense and clean fights. I prefer boxer-punchers and bad asses. Not a fan of defense first type fighters. Never have, never will. what is bad asses style again

I think a lot of our preferences just come from who we grew up watching. I used to only care about heavy-handed brawlers because my dad and I watched those kinds of fights every Saturday night over pizza. But talking to fans outside your usual bubble really shifts your perspective.I started at Swarmer Mike Tyson
but moved to Pure Box Floyd
Preferences Today
Pure Box
Boxer-Punch
Swarmer
Slugger
Brawler
I don't like Conor Benn because I've seen footages of him being an asshole to other boxers, seems like an egotistical maniac outside of the ring.
I'm sure he's a nice and lovely guy to those who know him on a personal level, but I just don't like his character and antics he displays. I don't think I'll ever be a fan of him.

I used to only care about heavy-handed brawlers because my dad and I watched those kinds of fights every Saturday night over pizza. But talking to fans outside your usual bubble really shifts your perspective. I was on flick chat and matched with a boxing fan from overseas. We ended up debating Bivol’s footwork for twenty minutes. It actually made me appreciate the pure chess-match style of boxing a lot more, even if I'll always prefer the KO artists.
For me personally, it has to do with their story line, style, nationality to a certain extent, and personality. I do like fighters I've been following for a long time just to see if they can make it or fail. I've seen a lot guys come through the rankings and the pundits, journalist and talking heads start hyping him up before he got KO. I know it's nationality for a lot of fans but I suspect that's more of a casual thing. Mexicans almost never root against their own guys unless they're fighting another Mexican. At least that's been my experience hanging around my co workers and such. I usually root for the Americans unless they get on my nerves.....Like Haney.....I can't stand Haney.
My least favorite fighters are guys who play the whole "A side/B side" game & use that as an excuse to not fight the best competition.
Also, the folks who believe in "letting fights marinate" and try to wait for their biggest threats to be beat by somebody else or get old.
Usually, they end up fighting people worst & less popular than the supposed "B-side" fighter, but you're not supposed to think about that.
Whatever the reasons for liking or disliking an athlete are, they're always personal, and in that sense, it's very hard to generalise. I don't mind it, it's just that some fans are unable to come out of their bias and be objective, they even take it personally when you say something about an athlete (or team) they like - very pointless, unintelligent even. Athletes and teams come and go, sports stay. I don't care if I have sympathy for an athlete who, despite that, is not necessarily number 1, 2, 3 or 4, even if someone else says he's *hit.
These fat asf heavyweights common these days who take millions of dollars and looked like they haven’t trained for more than 2 weeks gets me more frustrated than anything these days. Miller, Bakole, Ruiz, Whyte.
also Shakur because he never pushes himself over 80% to try and hurt his opponent, then talks cocky asf like he’s the second coming of Leonard.
Are you Russian? You crack me up with Fat Guy Buff Guy stuff. And you seem to love Bivol.
I admittedly have a bias towards Biev. I watched him growing up with my dad (who recently passed) and we never missed a fight of his.
I think Bivol is a smart fighter but he is way too hesitant to mix it up for my taste. Apparently in sparring he has power, he just doesn't often sit down on his punches in real fights. It frustrates me to watch him because I feel that he could be a fun guy to watch.
RIP to your father sounds like he was a fan of Buff Guy Artur
Me I'm a fan of Russia
yes i think he could step on the gas v elite guys but i dont think he could stop them and then he would leave himself more open as well so im sure he chooses his style to get the W in the endTop Soviet Bivol WAS a ko puncher until after the Sullivan Barrera fight
that was the last time I seen him sit down on right hands to knock someone out
Like Floyd Top Soviet Bivol has GLASS HANDS problem
so they developed a punching technique and style to protect their glass hands
I think of Benavidez fighting Biev at this point and if Bena walked in and stopped him it would suck, because I like Biev.
If any fighter stop Biev it would suck. But if it was a good fight and both guys tried I wouldn't go on a hate rant about whomever beat him and downplay the guy because I'm butthurt.
Why do people do that? Boxing used to be about fans wanting a good fight. Now it seems like the sport is mostly fan boys.
internet
pre-internet if their guy lost, they'd go back to living life outside offline in the world
they wouldn't constantly remind themself of what happened to their fighter

Agreed.
Guys like Bivol that are SO cautious but could likely KO most guys....that is just maddening for me to watch.

U cant like every boxers style and output just not possible
Agreed.

thats a bit odd
from what ive read from his opponents bivols power is enough to keep opponents honest as in they cant just rush in regardless and ignore it, canelo even said his power was good if i remember
Yeah I have read that. It makes Bivol frustrating for me to watch.
Fat Dave checks 4 of the 5 on my criteria
While I usually don’t care for the flat footed Mexican pressure style
Given his mold Fat Dave punches pretty accurately, has a good jab, and defends well
Fat Dave fights I’ve paid to watch include Gvozdyk Cuban Dave Buff Guy Yarde Fat Gilbert
Saul Santos is another Mexican with fights I’ve paid for. He’s a deliberate puncher who had good upper body slickness

If anything guys like Floyd and Top Soviet Bivol have power
they don't commit to shots but still get the opponent's respect
Top Soviet's slappy strikes kept Buff Guy Artur honest
