Following the dressing down they received from Mike Mazzulli and the ABC in 2021 which precipitated the so-called 'title reduction plan', the WBA announced the relocation of their headquarters to the US (Houston, Texas specifically) in July 2022.
I suspected at the time this was a cynical act of appeasement, designed to reduce the risk of being locked out of their main market for sanctioning fees. It now looks like it was nothing more than optics, as more than three years on the WBA is still located in Panama.
I think it's reasonable to assume that part of the reason for this is that, behind their nepotistic president's grandstanding, legal heads know that being domiciled in the US significantly raises the prospect of FBI investigation and greater levels of congressional scrutiny. Let's not forget, all but one of the 'big four' sanctioning bodies is based in Latin America.
Perhaps a journalist could ask Mendoza directly when the WBA plans to complete its relocation to the US and what's been the cause of the three-year lead time. I have written many emails to the WBA over the years and never once received a response.
They've been doing good business with PBC, but PBC has slowed down significantly, so they must be on belt-tightening measures. Decubas, for one, has been given easy access to their belts, and who knows what the deal is behind the scenes in terms of money. Where is Lara, by the way? Why is that belt of his dormant?
A possible unification with Janibek was reported a few weeks ago but it doesn't look like it's official.
