In terms of value for money, did Canelo exhibit things in the ring that justified the huge purses he earned?
Mike Tyson - hugely exciting to watch due to his sheer brutality & ability.
Holyfield - always demonstrated warrior spirit making his fights must watch events
Roy Jones Jr - unbelievable to watch and fought in an unprecedented way at the time
Lennox Lewis - tremendous power & athleticism and was able to neutralise most styles
Pacquiao - Phenomenal hand speed & ability to find angles. His fights were very entertaining
Mayweather - Boxing purists marvelled at the things he was able to do. Possibly the best defence of all time
Oscar De la Hoya - All action style, his fights were intense and fun to watch
Comparing Canelo to a few of the above mentioned cash-cows, you'd have to say what exactly did he deliver that warranted the huge sums?
At 154/155lbs he was able to look flashy against a few overmatched opponents like Josesito Lopez and Angulo but whenever he fought anyone decent in the higher weights he turned into a boring, low output counter puncher, with terrible stamina, who often got frustrated in fights. Yes he won fights but he wasn't exhibiting feats that were truly entertaining or mesmerizing to separate him from the rest. It's wild to think he picked up 100M for the way he fought against Scull, a fight which was realistically quite close.
Anthony Dirrell
Gavril TWICE
David is 28. At 28 Saul already had:
golovkin
Miguel
Erislandy
Austin
Whovril :dunno:
I still say, if Nelo had Benny's "resume", he'd be laughed out of the sport.
.......Morrell ?
Extremely premature to say he will be more than he is now
.......Gvoz ?
Best W is a shot to hell Adonis
.......BooBoo ?
:lol1:
.......Plant ?
Irony
.......LeMeh ?
The absolutely worst possible version :lol1:
And this is his highlight section :dunno: !
This need to give Benny's "resume" more credit that it deserves is puzzling

Unbiased ( :lol1: ) fight fans seem to feel Benny The Boss has a superior resume :dunno:
That Nelo is pure sheeeeit
#Conspiracies-R-TrueDavid has beat guys who are realistically contenders or gatekeepers
I do not believe that Benavidez fighter will become as good as Saul was
the greats have outperformed him against fresher Caleb and younger Gvozdyk
Once Caleb is chance, twice Gvozdyk is coincidence, thrice Buff Guy Yarde would be a pattern
indicator of future greatness perform better against a common opponent

Benny The Boss was unable to use his extraordinary resume to catapult him to superstardom ?!?!?!?!?

The answer is Tank
All of those other dudes (some of whom weren't "cash cows") are first-ballot Hall of Famers, including Canelo.
Tank is not a HOF unless something drastic happens.
I'm not a big fan, but am thankful Canelo was ready to go at the right time - I can't imagine what it would have looked like if there was nobody after the wreckage Floyd left.
Saul's rise to super stardom still puzzles me
this guy was manufactured for stardom from day 1 despite having no elite amateur background
Saul wasn't a handsome kid with social media a la Ryan Garcia
he had OKAY performances in his biggest fights
it took Floyd and manny years and they had to beat multiple hall of famers in the process
must be Saul's Irish passing appearance
Saul 8-4 Old Miguel
Saul Come From Behind KO Old Kovalev
Saul 8-4 Old Golovkin
HOW and WHEN is also important alongside WHO!
This wasn't a dominant fighter unlike Floyd who gave out boxing lessons in his biggest fights nor manny who was destructing opps
coincidentally Saul is around his former mentor Oscar's tier of greatness
Saul has 3 fights remaining in his Riyadh contract
I believe he has one last great performance left in him would love to see Saul beat David and go out on a high note
Saul has done a lot for the sport by making almost every big fight he could have made. He deserves to go out on a high note
i dont know i have oscar higher, especially if you factor in oscars win over trinidad which is better than canelos over 36 year old ggg.

I think a lot of his rise to stardom can be credited to GBP, like Oscar or not, he did a fabulous job of building this up. Also, Canelo came up just before the full fledged social media stardom was a big factor in selling a star, his pro career started before the smartphone came out and social media wasn't the same as it is now when he became a star.
Plus, he was a really good fighter, and I think he had a fun style on his way up. You add all that to the nationalism/tribalism of boxing and it paved the way for him to become what he was.
Nothing stopping him from cleaning out Bridgerweight and becoming 3x undisputed like Bud :rofl:Imo, No. His claim to fame was losing to Floyd. Also GBP/Oscar had a lot do to with Canelo's success. GBP/Oscar did a good job at promoting Canelo and putting him in the right direction to demand high purses even after leaving GBP.
Canelo's high purse is because he copied Floyd's blueprint by fighting only during the 2 Mexican holiday, and since Canelo is Mexican, this plays a major role for him demanding a high purse because the Mexican fans will be tuning in. But overall, Canelo is a boring fighter. He's been a boring fighter since knocking Amir Khan out. Then his popularity increased again after knocking drunk Kovalev out. But aside from those 2 fights, the rest of his fights were a snooze fest to me. Saul's rise to super stardom still puzzles me

It always happens when a fighter reaches the end of their career, but man the diminishing of Canelo seems to come about in a tidal wave.
I was critical of Canelo's resume throughout his career, not because it isn't good (it is pretty good) but because it isn't legendary as some have made it out to be. Mostly because virtually every future HOFer he beat, he beat as they were old and past their prime. That being written, he still has lots of good wins, was a very good fighter, and fun to watch especially in his SWW days. I think as he got older he fell in love too much with his chin and power. But 154 Canelo was slick, and a counterpuncher who sat right there in the pocket. To try and diminish him as boring is to be a prisoner of the moment and forget who he was when he was younger. Also, his first fight with GGG is imminently re-watchable, I think it shouldve been fight of the year, and probably wouldve been had Byrd's card not been so far out of whack.
As Southpaw rightly noted, they all can't be "super greats". Canelo is not an all time top 25 fighter. But he is all time top 100, and I may even go as high as all time top 60 range. Thats AMAZING. There was a time when he very well may have been the best P4P in the world, and most certainly was top 5 P4P for a good amount of time. We shouldn't let the fans of someone cause us to skew our view of them.Saul 8-4 Old Miguel

they tried to make guys like wilder and tank cash cows but i guess they flopped
- - Nobody who counts for anything in the US know who those two thugs are.
Craw started as a thug, but ended up boring as can be was lucky Arum stuck with him in spite of losing $$$ on him.
