Time for a new series called worst title runs of all time.
animal lover billy joe Saunders was in the news lately so I thought I would do him first.
Here is his title run at 168:
Won vacant wbo belt off of unranked(ring and tbrb) guy named shefat isufi. No one knows who this is. Guy never fought anyone and had 3 losses already and 2 draws.
First defense agaisnt Marcelo coceres. Another unranked guy who had never fought anyone. Since losing to Saunders has gone 4-7. And Saunders was losing the fight before koing coceres in the 11th. Yikes
Second defense agaisnt Martin Murray. Murray was a top level 160 pound fighter 5 years prior but never did anything at 168 and was unranked.
3 sh-it title fights and then he lands a unification fight with canelo who ko's him.
I'm sure we will find worse title runs but we are off to an embarrassing start.
Manny at JMW.
Wins title at 151 over a guy that is 1-1 at full 154. Then gives up belt.
Not only at 154, but also at 147, 140, 135, 130, 126, 122 and 112.
I don’t know if you can rightfully call what guys like Ruiz and Romero had/have “runs.” John only defended the belt successfully twice. Romero even less. And the history of the sport is littered with countless short-term champions. Nash out gave a good example in Mike Tyson. I like Mike as much as everyone else, but, honestly, his reign was weak — one of the reasons why I’ve always said he’s overrated.
but he at least beat 1 good fighter in porter. i know thats a low bar but saunders' title run had 0 good fighters. just complete bums. those are the kind of title runs i like to laugh at i mean analyze. im also looking for long title runs with maybe 1 or 2 top 10 fighters but mostly bums. i think artur grigorian had about 17 defenses and only beat 1 top 10 fighter who was ranked like 9th. my kind of guy
Title run I class as the defences made so not including Porter, those 3 for defences are trash af
Gary Russell Jr run as featherweight champion was near fraudulent. He fought decent opponents but hardly fought. It allowed Showtime to claim he was the longest reigning champion boxing which was technically true but didn't mean a whole lot.
And soon as he fought another athletic featherweight with some pop, he lost.
Rolly is basically a overly backed version of Blair Cobbs. Mario Barrios also wouldn't be a world champion at a standard competitive division.
Jermall Charlo is said to be better than his brother, but he never took the challenges Jermell did at 154. Even at losses or controversial decisions against world champions, he ran it back and beat multiple top level fighters, shouldn't had moved up two divisions for a payday, would be a top player at middleweight today.
i will never understand the rolly affect, the only thing i can think of is that someone wanted him as an opponent and pulled out all the stops, real shame for the people who got shafted along the way tho
With KO power and his mouth he sells fights but his road has been buttered up. Most protected fighter I have ever seen, from refs stopping a fight or judges gifting him the fight he has all bases covered by unseen forces.
rolando romero is a 2 division champion. the worst ever. he got a gift title shot at 135, lost by ko, got a gift shot at 140 while being unranked there, got a gift stoppage win, lost by ko then got a THIRD title shot at 147 while being unranked there. this dum ba ss got 3 title shots with zero good wins. meanwhile people here want other boxers to "earn their shot" when they already earned it. "who did he beat?"
don't be silly with listing mayweather, rahman, brook etc. these guys had at least one good fair win. saunders and romero had zero.

In recent memory I have to say Deontay Wilder.
10 title defences and somehow he managed to fight NO relevant names of his era until losing to Fury
Where was Haymon digging up those opponents.
Joseph Parker was also pretty bad, his sparring partner Razvan Cojanu and Hughie Fury in two terrible fights before meekly surrendering his belt to AJ.

Bruce Seldon
Margarito
HORN
A Ruiz ( :lol1: )
Rahman ( :lol1: )
(Fluky 1 n dones count, yes ? )
Great list, that being said, Nash respects Andy Ruiz's reign as the Snickers Champion of the world and thought the belt was cool. Nash out - His Majesty
Kell Brook beat Porter then instead of using that to get to a new level and fight big names he fought, Jo Jo Dan, Gavin and Bizier.

Or you could try making a positive vibes thread for once.
if positive vibes got the job done kam-ala harris would be president etc...if you want something positive all these bums saunders fought got some money
Wilder and Mayweather, with Haymon involved you knew they were never going to lose. They only fought opponents that were no threats. All the threats were dodged and ducked. Same deal with Tank Davis, just all phony set ups. They say Joe Louis had a dull run with a series of "bum of the month" challengers but at least the fight were real - or they were recorded as such. Who knows, maybe many of them were hired patsies.
Mike Tyson's could be the worst ever. Beat Berbick for the title, the only reason anyone remembers who Berbick is, is because he beat the shell of the shell of the remains of Ali. He then beat a few guys with very padded records, before taking on a massively out-of-shape, Larry Holmes, who came into the fight off the back of two losses to an overrated light Heavyweight in Spinks. Holmes wasn't that good anyway, and was only the King in the weakest era ever, and also, was best known for beating the shell of Ali. Tyson obviously beat this version of Holmes, which was similar to the version Butterbean beat up, knocked down, and got robbed against.
Tyson then beat Tubbs, who was useless, then the Light Heavyweight Spinks, who was terrified of the Tyson Hype. Average wins over stiff Bruno and Williams, followed a severe beating, boxing lesson and KO loss to Buster, who was to be honest, quite rubbish himself.
Some more average wins, then goes life and death with Ruddock, needing a rematch to show he was better than him, though he to his credit, came out unscathed from the "Cocoon of Horror" against McNeeley against the odds.
Three more okay wins and he faced a real fighter in Holyfield and was battered twice in a row. A few wins, then losses to Lewis, Williams, and McBride, then a mini-redemption in taking the Face of Boxing Jake Paul the distance. Tyson's career hype rating A+++, actual career rating C-.
