POLL: What should be the CORRECT decision for the Suarez-Navarrete fight?
-SUAREZ BY TKO
-No Contest
-navarrete by technical decision ud
-none of the above (explain)
It was Navarette who stopped fighting making it look like it's a head butt. The ref like everyone else didn't see it clearly until it was seen on video replay. The ref was prompted by Navarette to do something, hence quickly rule it as a head butt.
Upon further review; Suarez should have been awarded a TKO victory over Navarrete because it's the correct call to make and the only call to make. If they are judging it solely by what is on the books.
For instance, they ruled that the cut was caused by a legal punch after 4 rounds had been completed. Therefore, the fight should have never gone to the scorecards in the first place.
It should have been stopped due to legal punch landed by Suarez awarding him the TKO victory. A NC was not the right call to make here by the CSAC because the cut was not caused by a foul.
However, the CSAC has very broad discretions in pertaining to these types of matters; So their ruling stands.
I disagree with the stoppage, but the fact is they stopped it and it was due to a cut caused by a punch. So it should be a TKO.
I would've preferred to just let the fight go on and have the fighters resolve it, but in choosing to stop it they committed to a result and they got the wrong result. It was a legal punch, so it's a TKO.
I think the stoppage was correct, though the initial call was obviously incorrect. I don't know how the announcers actually believed the cut was from a head butt. One could clearly see the impact on the eye from the punch was far more significant than the graze of the forehead. That cut was very deep and Navarrete's corner could not stop the bleeding. If the fight had been allowed to continue, Emmanuel would likely have suffered even greater damage to his eye and may have even been caught with a big shot that he couldn't see coming.
