I use specific fights (BOXING) to remember my life. Generally speaking, if you tell me a fight I saw I can tell you who I was friends with at the time, where I was and what I was doing.
Example, exhibit A: 1. October 10, 1987 Frank Tate vs Michael Olajide for the IBF middleweight title. I was fighting in the finals of the National PAL tournament in Jacksonville, Florida that day against Kertis Mingo at 165 pounds and we watched the Tate - Olajide fight in our hotel room before we left for the arena. (Tate W-12 Olajide)
2. August 19, 1982. I was in the police explorers staying at Westover Air Force Base for the Police Explorers Academy week when they let us take a trip to a store off base and I read in the newspaper that Alex Ramos had lost the previous day to Ted Sanders.
3. Marlon Starling-Mark Breland rematch in (March??) 1988. I watched it at the Civic Pub downtown Hartford with my boy Dan Nolan and it was so crowded and loud that I could not hear the decision announced but I left there assuming that Marlon had won the decision. I did not find out until the next morning that the fight had been called a draw.
4. Mike Tyson-Carl “The Truth” Williams -I believe it was June 1989- and I watched it with my friend Mark at Monia Goin‘s house at Squire Village in Manchester
5. Chavez-Sweet Pea, D-12. Watched it at Pepe Vazquez’ apartment on Capital Ave. in Hartford…thought Pea won that one clearly!!!
April 6,1987…watched Hagler-Leonard on closed circuit at the Springfield, Mass. civic center with my coach and stabemates…at one point in the fight,Ray answered Marvin with a multipunch flurry and some guy right behind me yelled out, “Thats right! Back up, baldie!!!!”
Mayweather Hatton I was on exercise with the army .I was hyped for that fight for months man .Otterburn near Newcastle in the snow .Early rise and thought I was running to the ranges in the morning so missed it for sleep .
Haye Mormeck
I watched it with my old late granda in his house , R.I.P .
Haye Chisora
Watched it in an Irish bar in Eindhoven .
Khan Garcia
I was in Amsterdam
Khan-Garcia. I was training Chad Dawson in Las Vegas and we all went over to the fight at the Mandalay Bay but at the last minute, we realized we didn’t have enough tickets so I volunteered to sit the fight out because my friend Bronco McKart was fighting across town at the Palms and I wanted to go to that anyway, so that’s what I did.
On my way out of the Mandalay Bay I ran into Bernard Hopkins in the lobby for the first time since Chad had beaten him a few months earlier and we had a nice meeting right there in the hotel, and he had some nice encouraging words for me that I’ve never forgotten.

That’s an amazing way to link memories with fights!
do it for all of them. November 1982 I ran from my father‘s apartment all the way to my house which is aboutt 2 miles away so I could watch Aaron Pryor versus Alexis Arguello on HBO. Then I ran back after the fight. I was 14 years old
That’s an amazing way to link memories with fights! Speaking of great tools, Jetcost helps compare flight prices fast so you can plan trips to boxing events easily. It shows deals from airlines and agencies so you can choose smartly and save for the next unforgettable match moment.
Well, you should! Been waiting forever your book, brother! Lol
i know, I KNOW!!! I’ve got things going on. I still am planning on releasing it. I will definitely post something on here when the time comes.
great stuff, my man!!! I really enjoyed that. I actually have about 125 fights that I’ve listed on my computer that I’ve done the same thing for and I’d like to put it together in some type of format so people can read it. I’m not sure how I’m going to do it, but I’m definitely going to do it

Tyson vs Douglas
- I was on a skiing trip with my mom's boyfriend's family in New Hampshire. I was 6. I remember it all, but didn't have much of an opinion at the time. I just knew that everyone was pulling for Mike.
Castillo vs Corrales
- I'll never forgive myself for this one. The broadcast just about to start, but I was leaving to go to a house party. The next morning at the barbershop, it was all everyone was talking about. Can't believe I missed that.
Jones vs Tarver II
- Again, at a house party. I had my best friend, who was on deployment, texting me round by round updates. I get a, "He knocked him out," text. The following texts and range of emotions weren't pleasant.
I could get far more detailed and go on for a while about various fights, but a lot of memories tied to fight night.
Pacquiao vs Marquez IV would take me 2 pages to type. Legendary night.
You’re not alone, John. I know some family members and friends must look at me like I’m rain man when I remember WHERE I WAS, WHO I WAS WITH, AND EVEN THE DATE.
Floyd/Hatton-watching it alone in the living room while my dad watched it in the bedroom. He came out to the living room. My brother wasn’t too much into boxing, but he came walking to the living room when he heard me shouting. He was bummed because he wanted Hatton to win.
Cotto/Margarito 1- I watched this fight with my brother, my best friend, and his friend in the living room. Again, my parents watched from the bedroom. Right before the fight, I vividly remember my dad taking a candle (like a rosemary candle-the one Catholics use for praying) and just placed it in front of us in the living room to get a rise out of me and basically saying that Cotto was going to get effed up. We just shouted at him and he just smirked and went back into the bedroom before the fight.
When they threw in the towel, I remember my mom standing in the hallway facing the living room just to see my reaction, and I remember walking up to her and yelling, “Que jodienda!” and I went into my bedroom and just sat there at my computer chair with my head in my hands. I had only begun to watch boxing a year and a half ago and Cotto was the reason why I really got into the sport. Cotto/Quintana with Margarito/Paul Williams on the undercard of a December 2006 Showtime Championship doubleheader was when I started getting into it. So naturally, as I assume most are when they start watching, they latch on to a fighter and see him as invincible…that fight hurt. But I wasn’t bummed about it to the point where I spiraled or anything. I literally rewatched the fight the next day because (controversy aside that followed six months later), Cotto/Margarito 1 WAS a good fight. Cotto even got a reception when he came to Puerto Rico. Fought his heart out even though there were LOADS of people on here calling him a quitter. The dude was done. He had NOTHING left to give. If he hadn’t taken a knee a second time (and I’ve posted dozens of times here), that fight would’ve ended like Pavlik/Taylor 1 in the corner. I’m sure of it.
Pacquiao/Hatton- living room with my mom, mom’s friend, my girlfriend, my brother, his girlfriend, my best friend. When Pacquiao iced Hatton, you knew INSTANTLY with the way he just fell that it was over. The camera shot with his face confirmed it. I remember EVERYONE in the living room horrified by what they were seeing but my dad came running out of the bedroom and ran into my arms, we hugged, hopped together around like idiots, and then he just left running to the bedroom. I love how we just did that spontaneously. But looking back on it now, that is definitely one of the scarier KO’s in boxing. I just hadn’t seen enough in the sport to take a moment and wait to see if a fighter is okay before acting a fool especially after as destructive as THAT.
Pacquiao/Marquez 4-didn’t watch it. I was living in the states at the time with no internet and my brother was updating me about the fight via text messages. I wish I had those screenshots saved. He texted me “Pacquiao got Hatton’d!” We were both frantically texting back and forth and he told me that he ran into Marquez’s shot and went blank. Still mad til this day that I missed that but there was no way for me to watch it in my living conditions back then.
James Kirkland/Alfredo Angulo-living room alone. Parents in the bedroom. Dad wasn’t even aware there was a fight on. I thought Ángulo was going to dog walk Kirkland (since he got stopped recently in the first round by AN UNKNOWN fighter…dropped THREE TIMES. Needless to say, the comeback by Kirkland isn’t that first round followed by his assault round after round had me shouting so much that my dad came out pissed and told me to shut the hell up.
Mayweather/Pacquiao-I watched it live on a Sunday afternoon (I was stationed in overseas). The military bar was PACKED. I remember being giddy as hell that Mayweather won. I also wasn’t used to hearing the non-stop ignorant/casual viewer chatter that comes when seeing a fight card around people in a bar. But I was so pumped in the lead-up to the fight that I actually ran my first ever full marathon over there. Took me like 6 hours to clear it, but I did!
I could go on for days, but I’m getting sleepy and writing this reminded me of how much I miss my pops. Watching fights with him was always special to me.
The last fight we watched together was Crawford/Spence. He passed away on Christmas 2023. I’ll post more in the morning.
Glad to see you still posting in these forums, John.

First fight I ever saw on TV was Peterson-Khan, during my junior year in HS. My dad walked into the living room and started watching too. He only really watched the big tyson fights in the 90s.....we've been hooked since....I live across the country now but we always call each other to debrief after each fight on a card. We were planning on going to Fundora-Thurman, but couldn't align schedules
I was at my friend’s apartment in Las Vegas the night he fought Mayweather… as soon as the fight was over we went down to the strip to see what was happening
Shit, oh, that BS! I was at my buddy's house in Green Valley, CA. We BBQ for the big fights most of the time. There were several people there. I remember hollering and cussing at Mayweather and Pacquiao for breaking a record in charging $100 for that POS fight. I think I may have shocked some of the guests with my outburst, but they agreed with me.
I was at the Firehouse sports bar in San Jose, CA for Pacquiao vs Marquez III, with some friends. We thought Manny had the fight in the bag, having dropped Juan in the fifth round and bloodying his face. He continued the tear into the sixth round, when he got a little too happy near the end of it, rushing in to finish Marquez. Then, BAM!! Holy shit! WTF?? Manny GKTFO!! COLD!!
How about any fight involving Manny Pacquiao?
My wife and I started dating right after I took her to an activity at the Utah Governor's Mansion in Salt Lake to watch Pacquiao v Nedal Hussein in 2002.
It's strange that I remember that.

I clearly remember missing Jones/Tarver 2 because I was having a fight with my GF that Saturday and Monday she broke up with me just before class and I handled it like such a weak beta simp at the time. I learned doe to always stay strong, be cool, and just walk off and usually they'll DM you in a few weeks like...."hey". True story.
I watched Chavez-Sweet Pea at my trainers apartment on Capital Ave…watched Tarver-Jones 2 at home and was on the phone with Marlon Starling when the left hand landed and I yelled into the phone in shock.
I was in Germany when Evander stopped Tyson. Heavyweight Mark Young knocked on my hotel room door at like 5 o’clock in the morning telling me that Tyson got stopped and I kept telling him to stop joking around and tell me what happened.
He insisted it was true.
He finally gave up on me and I went back to bed for a couple minutes, but decided to check just in case. I turned on the TV and we had CNN International and when I turned it on it showed Tyson sitting at the press conference and it was in a different language, but I could tell by watching the body language that he had lost.

4. Mike Tyson-Carl “The Truth” Williams -I believe it was June 1989- and I watched it with my friend Mark at Monia Goin‘s house at Squire Village in Manchester

For Tyson/Williams: I was watching in my parents living room with my mom. I still remember the ring introduction and Carl's white/red trunks. I loved The Truth but man did he get smoked in that one!
Chavez/Sweet Pea: I was with my older brother watching at his buddy's apartment and everyone was upset about the draw.
I grew up in the shadows of the Atlantic City Casinos and I probably grew up a fan of boxing because the the proximity of the fights to where I lived.
- - Yo, Ice, how is Beter doing. Is the final Trilogy fight being worked out as we speak?
That is easily one of the top trilogies for the 2020s.
I cant say with 10000 pct certainty but I do believe the 3rd fight will be next, yes. I REALLY DO HOPE SO.
