Lamont Roach lost out on a career defining victory all because a corrupt ref allowed tank to take a knee, get his face wiped off by his trainer and not rule it a knockdown
and you wonder why PBC has been kicked off of every network they been on
Honestly, it's shocking that of all refs it was Steve Willis who made the bad call. The dude has been in plenty of good fights and generally on point. I think either the moment caught up to him or the hype around Davis. It kind of happened quickly and he thought what the hell is he doing? He must be legit in some kind of "other" trouble to take a knee. Let me stop counting and see what the deal is. In a way, to think he's making a proper call as if Tank was tripped or headbutted.
Though this was not the case. Any fighter that goes down and takes a knee out of nothing should be ruled a knockdown. Makes it worse that this fight was razor thin and a knockdown ruled in Roach's favor would have won him the decision.
Yes , the googly eyed mofo is usually on the ball but what pissed me off is the fact he started the count and then stopped
Why ???
There was only a few numbers left to count and could of gotten the answer right after
Makes me wonder hmmmmmm
I disagree, guys like Jimmy Young & Carl Williams died broke when they should've been millionaires & would've been millionaires if they had been rightfully awarded victories in fights that they won.
Not only is boxing unjust, it's the most unjust sport.
In baseball, basketball, football, etc . . , when you lose, it's just a game, your salary doesn't go up or down based on that.
In boxing, when you lose, your purses don't go up in most instances.
Imagine if Tank doesn't rematch Lamont Roach?
He may never make that much money again.
It's unjust.
Excellent points, why am I not surprised?
Fighters are strong and tough... Given this image, It is hard for people to even imagine how vulnerable they are to the inconsistent and political driven agendas that control the sport and ultimately the destiny of the fighters. And you are exactly right, Roach could really be hurt financially because of a rule not being enforced. I actually do not think the infraction is complicated. The ref does not have to be brought in, any ideas about how the fight would change course are a red herring. Box Officer said it best: "It should be ruled a DQ" because the ref was not asked, a knee was taken, and that is what the rules state.
The commission is so bereft of intelligence and compassion that they used the excuse about taking a point away... The truth is, IF they took the point away, it would be the same result as a DQ anyway. I pity them that they either ignore that fact, or do not know it... But a proper DQ avoids any conflict about what a fighter would do knowing they were down a point and it happens to be the correct ruling.
The ref started counting but In fact he was just counting how long tanks timeout would be which is entirely up to tank after all

Other live sports are not as inaccessible as boxing.
Boxing is still watched by many people in decent numbers, especially now that they found ways to watch it for free in this internet age.
Boxing is not a sport that is seen everyday live on TV unlike other sports. I watch tennis or at least a glimpse of it just to keep myself up to date.

Pretty much so. And not every card in a big boxing event is entertaining. Sometimes, if not most, prelim fights are more action-packed than the main ones. I have no problem with that, but it doesn't prevent me from checking out other sports channels during an ongoing boring fight. That's when you realize not many people in the world are watching boxing like you think. Large crowds gather watching football, cricket, tennis, rugby, basketball, you name it, in and out of your time zone.

Field sports are better for live crowds I suppose. In fact, That's why Boxing caught on sooner for televised broadcast in the 50s. The action is in a tighter space, easily captured by the camera.

It's the hardest sport. As real as they get. But in any sport where the ascetic part of the scoring is subjective, you will get disagreement. Unjust? That depends of who you're rooting for in the close ones. Still, boxing is far above pro wrestling, and all the kid games that adults get paid to play.

Boxing will never die. It's just as niche a sport as ever.

Boxing is almost a pseudo-sport, not far above pro wrestling. The number of unjust outcomes makes it too much a roll of the dice.
Unjust is a bit strong. It’s subjective. I think we as fans also carry biases into every fight we watch. When the outcome isn’t the one you wanted, fans go right to conspiracies and negativity.
That isn’t saying there is no corruption or terrible robberies because there surely is.

A championship-level fighter subjects himself to deprivation and intense training, the likes of which most people can’t even conceive of, then he’s robbed of his rightful win. And that’s not to speak of the monetary losses to himself and his family. It’s literally a crime. Who wants to see that s hit? Turns everyone off.

You sure? Very weird perspective
That was a great fight that many people will want to see a rematch.
Yes, the ref blew it and cost Roach a title. The controversy made big news that will make the rematch even bigger.
I do not think this hurt the sport as much as it did the reputation of Tank and that of a good ref that made a really bad mistake.
Roach definitely came out of this elevated.
For decades, Boxing was one of the big three sports in the United States alongside Baseball and Horse racing.
Outside of the U.S., It was the largest professional spectator sport by far, for most of the time that those have existed.
Combat Sports fans are in awe when a televised PPV event breaks 1.5 million viewers today, but in the 1970s, Ali fights would routinely reach 1 billion!
From that perspective, Boxing has certainly shrunk in societal attention. But that's due to a vast increase in entertainment choices. Not Boxing's health.

I hate to even bother with threads that begin with erroneously assuming Boxing's demise. But all was explained when it was noticed that the thread starter was named "Fruit".
This controversy could be the best thing to happen to LRJ.
More hype
More interest
More money
Pretty sure he'd rather have the win and the WBA lightweight title.
