Guys like George Foreman, George Chuvalo, and Julio Chavez come to mind. Meanwhile a "defensive" guy like Pernell Whitaker ended up slurring his words a bit before his death.
All things considered Sugar Leonard won boxing
he emerged victorious with most of his mind intact and kept a lot of his boxing earnings
Other fighters I consider having won boxing George Foreman Larry Holmez Oscar de La Hoya Mayweather
Oscar is fortunate his coke habit didn’t ruin him
Right? I thought he’d be probably be the next to last man standing between Duran (a party animal), Hearns (punch drunk) and Hagler (walked away with dignity).
And Hagler was the first to go. Wtf, right?

George Chuvalo was the FIRST guy with a bullet that came to mind. That man speaks clearly and sounds like a man who did 20 years in construction. He doesn’t sound at all like he was in boxing and had that many wars.
EDIT: Oh, damn. I’m reading more posts and am now finding out his age has finally caught up and he can’t speak. Damn shame. I vividly remember him in a feature ESPN made called “Ali’s Dozen”. He talked in there about how his sons unfortunately became cocaine addicts. That man was probably like 63-67ish and spoke CLEAR AS DAY.
Time flies. Bums me out a little.
George was perfect for his 80th birthday. No memory loss, no speech impediment, sharp and witty and strong as a bull. His issues began in his mid 80s when most men are already dead. He is 87 now, and sadly, no longer speaks.
For some obscure reason, I wrote about him as if he were no more. Perhaps it's time for me to mind my own symptoms...
In fact, Chuvalo suffered from serious dementia in the final years of his life. Sometimes the effects appear all of a sudden, and become more serious after a period of apparent normality.

ODLH is surprisingly pretty sharp in all his anger filled videos he posts against Canelo Guys like Morales, Barrera, Marquez, Pacquiao. They've all been in wars and last I've heard them speak, were as normal as I remembered them.
Tim Bradley had been in wars and the dude still does commentary and ProBox.
I think at the end of the day, like others have mentioned, it comes down to genetics. Probably the same genetics as to why some guys take a punch and turn into a vegetable while others can go through 40+ hellacious fights and appear normal.
David haye, Carl froch, Paul malignaggi, Richie Woodall seem ok.
Luckily.most retired boxers arent punch drunk. I think it's only mainly in movies like a rocky film a boxer is portrayed as punch drunk in a cliche type way.
Oscar is fortunate his coke habit didn’t ruin him
I believe it's more Manny Pacquiao's shots that ruined his psyche AND his brain. Coke is probably going to act as a door opener for future brain issues. Punches taken and drugs have always been a lethal combination for fighters.
Having said that, and as much as I dislike De La Hoya as a person, I'm definitely not wishing that to happen to him, or to anyone else for that matter.
yeah or there could be other issues. i do remember always thinking foreman looked great for his age, sounded very alert but also now remember him saying before his hands were ***ed up from the years of boxing. i dont remember if it was like arthritis or what.
SRL i used to remember him always being super alert but then lately i noticed he is a little loopy acting

Just because the signs aren't immediately visible to you in short segments listening to them speak doesn't mean the damage isn't there.

Mike Tyson comes to mind, he was in some tough fights and took plenty of big hits....
Man, it’s true. Chuvalo, especially, took a lot of punishment. Must be a genetic thing. As with anything else, some people are just built for it. Look at poor Wilfredo Benitez, a man famous for his defense — “El Radar”. Dude is a real mess these days.
