We are discussing a specific timeframe I thought. 07, 08 to 09ish i guess.
Sure, Floyd had a reason for both Margs and Cotto. They were the top dogs in the division when Floyd "retired".
After Cotto beat Mosley would have been the perfect time for a Floyd match up- (This is pre Cotto/Marg 1 and Cotto/Pac, at WW). You would be lying if you said it would be the same fight when Cotto/Floyd was at 54, later in Cotto's career. Floyd would most likely win, but my boy Miguel would have given him a much better fight. As a Cotto fan I felt Floyd's retirement robbed me of that fight at the time. Oh well.
With Marg, Its ok. We saw the video. No need to stress how scared Floyd was of Margarito. Styles make fights my friend. It would have been a more interesting fight than people will admit to. Floyd had the skills no doubt, but does he have the pop to keep Marg back the entire fight? I would have like to see that, wouldn't you?
Dela Hoya barely lost. Floyd should have given him a rematch. In hindsight, instead of Manny it should have been Floyd. It would have been an easier $win$. Guarantee Floyd slapping himself for not taking that.
Then when Floyd decided to unretire- he fought a "fat" JMM who he brought up 2 classes and cheated him 2 pounds, LOL.
It's all good though bro. With everyone fighting each other during that time while Floyd was on the sidelines. Future generations will come to the conclusion that Floyd is a chump who was scared when the timing to do great things was there. He did it to himself and his own legacy. Not a good look, his retirements will age badly regardless of the reasons.
I can see your point regarding Cotto, I feel the same way... Floyd is not the only one fighting at catch weights etc, but Cotto is a little bigger than Floyd, and Cotto always had skills, at their best it would have been a great fight. But timing is always the variable out of control.
Styles do make fight but does not give a reason for Margarito having success. A true pressure fighter would give Floyd problems Margarito did not have the feet to apply pressure that way. Floyd could pick Margarito apart, others did... Margarito beat martinez, that is his best scalp. He beat good workmanlike fighters, never an elite puncher, except cheating against Cotto.
Rematches... Yes De La Hoya fight was close, but again, its a rematch not a compelling reason to avoid when a first fight happened, whether we agree with the conclusion, or not.
Floyd did unretire... Agreed. I don't disagree with Floyd's motivations only the conclusion that he retired because the division was too strong, when the real reason by all logic was to keep his record in tact.

To put the original question of the thread in a basic perspective...
I think the list of successful fighters who are clean for their entire careers is much shorter than the list of those who juice regularly or at some point.
It's hard to say if Floyd would have been "strong" enough to manhandle Marg like Shane IMO. Floyd is not that big. The size difference is what make it interesting. (Sergio and Paul, their styles would have been interesting to see as well)
IMO, Marg took the primes of both Cotto and Manny. Cotto no need to explain. With Manny, if looking at punch stats. His numbers start going down after Marg.
Brains > brawn
At WW, May was not about beating people up :lol1:
A punchers chance is what I would have given Marg.
However, May's sick defense, solid chin and hand speed would have been too much for someone as predictable and slow as Marg.
Just mho.
I was very surprised Shane beat Marg the way he did. Expected a 12-0 UD.

Homeboy wished he fought a roider :(
On and on.....
Is there a pic where PBF/May, OR ANY ROIDER, did this much damage to his opponent ?
''Roids are destroying boxing :crying:.......................''
So, how many times have tampered/loaded gloves killed a boxer in the ring?
You’ve still yet to answer that.
I heard a whisper that he trained like an animal, the word on his work ethic was legendary way before he was recognised as being great, I guess it doesn't pay to work harder than the next guy they only going to say you cheated, if only a pill could make a Floyd Mayweather we would be inundated with them.
This......
Whats up RB. Of course, I say "scared" as a way of riling up Floyd's fans. Just for the fun of it, LOL!
But he waited or paused his career for who knows why. We got lots of great fights at WW during that time. Sure, you can bring up the Top Rank/Floyd feud for reasons of Floyd not making any deals. But those fights were the biggest $ deals at the time.
lol ok Its hard to tell around here lol, lots of pressure on the big time guys some get burnout and have personal problems, which I believe is going on with Charlo atm but there is heaps saying he was scared off by Tim, I don't believe that for a minute he has a world of personal sht going on, its the same with Floyd for all his BS he isn't a scared fighter, don't let his style fool you, one cannot fight the guys he fought and be scared of fighting somebody, but anyway yeah it would have been a great fight and at the time the Williams fight would have been hard to make because Floyd wasn't long out of 135 and Williams was about to go to 154, at the time it wasn't as big a deal because Floyd wasn't big time until oscar, but today when Floyd is retired and done achieving so much notoriety, now fighting Williams is a big deal, especially to the haters, when a guy beats everyone he fights the haters can only run with guys he didn't fight, its all so transparent.
Was more of a PBF fan than a May fan
Moving up was inevitable.
He was a good ''bad guy'', though :lol1:
I don't think people would have given him credit if he fought Marg and beat him.
Again, I doubt Marg's level of toughness would have been something May wouldn't have figured out by rd 2.
May being the smartest boxer cannot be denied.
May vs Paul and Maravilla were fights I wanted to see.

Just a quick question, do you recognize the element of Floyd being sick of the game after the ODH fight, there was fallout with his father haters coming out the woodwork by then etc etc etc, the bit about being SCARED doesn't compute when you look at who he fought over his career, or was he scared when he retired and not scared when he come back and beat guys that would and did beat the guys he was supposed to be scared off, did I word that right.

Paul would have been an interesting fight for Floyd. And I agree, a much tougher fight than Marg. I know Marg has a face forward style, lol. But you cannot deny his toughness.
Manny did not dictate anything to Oscar. It was Oscar own doing, him coming in like that. or just a reminder his time was up. I don't give Manny any credit for what he did to Dela Hoya. And I followed Oscar but boxers need a reminder to retire sometimes.
I followed Floyd too. He just sucks when he got to WW. No biggie, it's on him.

Can't say beating May with force was the way to go.
Paul Willie would have been a tougher fight than Marg.
1 handed Clottey clowned him (the announcers were lol'ing their asses off...''He's (Marg) not very talented but fun to watch''), even in a loss.
Cotto was handling him rather easily in their 1st fight before he gassed himself (too much hopping and bouncing around. Wasted energy when he didn't need to).
Shane pretty much annihilated him and May pretty much clowned Shane.
Pac gets credit for draining DLH and Cotto (openly rejecting a no clause rematch vs Cotto), yet, May is a loser for what he put JMM through :dunno:
As for May being scared, his resume stacks up against any resume you want to compare it to.
