It doesn’t matter who is at fault for the fights not happening but they have let the fans down.
Greed is the main culprit! Each of the top 4 guys have only fought 1 of the other top 4. Fury fought Wilder & Usyk fought Joshua. Wilder is 37, Usyk 36, Fury 35 & Joshua 34… Lennox was done at 38 but he fought everyone! These big fights are past their best dates. This era had so much potential but GREED by the fighters & promoters ruined what could have been. They could have all fought each other & walked away with even more than what they have now.
The 4 belt era is another culprit. Promoters would rather milk a beltholder than actually risk them losing their title & the sanctioning bodies corruption favouring certain fighters & promoters.
Some of the blame can even be directed towards the fans. Too much emphasis on a fighter losing his “0”. A guy loses a couple of fights & he is exposed, a bum or overrated. That hasn’t helped a fighter’s marketing ability. I have accepted that there may never be another undisputed champion.
I started watching HW boxing in the Tyson era so Ali was before my time. During my era as a fan the 90s were hands down the best. 3 belts but everyone fought each other & many times more than once. I never used to miss a fight but now i am so far behind on all the recent HW fights & have started to lose interest. When HBO & FNF ended I think that is when things really started to decline. American HWs got regular exposure on those telecasts. Not into paying for sport streaming services. I just try to watch replays on youtube when possible.
Doc,
Do you think Alex Garcia gets into the global top 10 tday?
I have no idea how he was rated #10. He beat nobody. His best opponents were Buster Mathis Jr & Joe Hipp. He lost both fights. He got ko’d by Mike Dixon & Garing Lane who were trialhorses that many contenders fought on the way up the ranks. Garcia had to avenge a loss to Mike Dixon. No business being anywhere near the top 10.
Usyk has fought everyone put in front of him, and just fought his mandatory. AJ has also at least tried to make the fights. And Wilder at least defended his title multiple times. Fury is by far the main one holding the era up.
Fury has not defended his titles 9 times. He has defended his WBC Title 3 times.
Fury lost his title when he disappeared unfortunately after his Kiltschko win.
Fury is a great fighter. But to date no matter what statistic games you play, nobody can rate him as a great Champion.
Even his own brother in his own words has stated this 'Fury's own brother stated that he does not rate him as a great Champion. Fury much prefers to be a underdog and a fighter chasing a title'.
Tyson Fury does not like being a Champion, he has not taking on all comers 'And by the looks of it, has no real intention to do so. That is not how historically great Champions behave'.
Deontay Wilder, Anthony Joshua were both statistically greater Heavyweight Champion's than Tyson Fury.
I totally understand your narrative, 100%. But I don't know what's on Fury’s mind.
if he doesn't want frequent fight, he should be a gentleman and Retire!
As a fight fan, I used to love that pattern set by Ali, Holmes, Tyson, Lewis and the Klitschko, when you knew that about every 3.5 months you were going to see some top 10 challenger march up the ring steps and take his shot. We ALL miss that!
He has defended the Actual Championship 9 times. W. Klitschko (Won title), Seferi, Pianeta, Wilder, Schwartz, Wallin, Wilder, Wilder, Whyte, Chisora, and soon, Ngannou.
If Fury "lost his title" somewhere in between, I missed that. Who beat him?
Gilberto Mendoza Jr.?, Daryl Peoples?, Francisco Varcarcel?
Man, brother; and I thought that Francis Ngannou was unworthy of a title shot!
Yes , the 1990's had both talent and depth. Holyfield fought everybody and Lewis, yes his chin could be exposed; his two KO losses happen when you fight 40+ matches at heavyweight vs. ranked contenders. Lewis fought 14+ ring ranked contenders. Fury, just three and one was old ( Wlad at 39 ). Upon reflection two ko losses happen under these circumstances . IE fighting 14+ ranked contenders.
A sample of the ranked contenders of 1992. You will see several hall of fame guys that were active, and Tyson was in prison for this ranking.

I'm as angry at Tyson Fury as anyone, for his inactivity this year, holding the Actual Championship and WBC belt hostage is bad enough, but to then BRAG about it?
Not making any new fans that a way.
But I guess, if I'm being honest, he's still better than most belt holders in recent decades when it comes to succesful defending and keeping his titles.

Joshua fought Usyk twice back to back, when many advised him not to 'Joshua could of easily fought another opponent'.
Wilder forced his rematch with Tyson Fury through the courts.
Both Wilder and Joshua are now contenders, and trying to rebuild.
Joshua took on all comers, and lost his titles 'That's boxing'.
People don't want to admit it? But the Tyson Fury heavyweight reign is one of the worst Heavyweight reigns of the past 25 years 'Fury is not a great Champion'.
There is no need to group all other Heavyweights in with Fury, Wilder made 10 defenses of his titles 'He tried his best to be a good Champion, Joshua took on all comers'.
Tyson Fury is currently fighting non-boxers, after only making 3 titles defenses of his WBC Heavyweight title etc.

People that keep on saying Fury and Wilder are top 3 guys, are living in the past.
Fury is done and Wilder only beat Helenius since 2019. Get over it. This era is over.
I agree the fans should take some of the blame. When AJ-Wilder fell apart, they both had a fanbase that defended and supported them instead of demanding they make the fight.
The current network divide is worse than ever too. I liked the era where HBO was the big budget boxing network, Showtime medium budget, and ESPN picking up some good fights along the way. If we still had that balance now, most of the top 4 would've fought each other on HBO imo.
I will say I think Usyk deserves the least criticism of the 4, and Fury deserves the most.

Rankings in boxing as a whole dont even make sense, you'd think you can just fight your way to the top, but that's just not possible, contenders dont fight each other because the moment they lose, their chances at a belt are almost gone (except if the said contender is such a bum the champ will pick him for a "voluntary defense"), the top contenders now are almost the same contenders 2 or 3 years ago ( and that just awful and a testament to how weak the talent is) so they just basically sit and fight bums till someone blesses them witha title shot (frank sanchez, efe ajagba, joe joyce, zhang all should have fought for a title atleast atleast once, but no, the last 5 years had 10 title fights against the same 5 guys, 4 light touches and a single contender.
In 5 years, 4 titles were fought for only 10 times, 5 years of waiting for the contenders, that's pathetic.
We basically have to sit around for what? 5-8 years with the same faces?
People must understand that this "era" is over. Fury is done, Wilder is hardly top 5 guy, the same goes to Joshua. Usyk actually just lost to a fringe contender.
Top guys are Zhang, Hrgovic and others.
It's in transition, I agree. I wouldn't, myself, say "Done", however. But inevitably getting there.
Fury will make $50,000,000 for UFC GOAT Ngannou, and could, if he chooses, make an additional $100,000,000 for Usyk, another 100,000,000 for Zhang, and yet another 75,000,000 for Joshua even after Wilder has starched him, which would button up his domination of the era fully, and push his career earnings up past the $490,000,000.00 mark.
(Not a bad take for someone who isn't an all-time great).
For all the bluster found on posting boards like Boxing Scene about Fury being a less than standard steward of the title; somebody seems to think he's worth paying a few bucks.
I guess that is what we call a gap in perception and reality.
But indeed, the "Fury Era" era (2015 - 2025) is coming into it's final stages.
The snapshot today might look something like this, below, with the bold type names likely to fade into history by or very soon after 2025.

Three imposters kind of agree what you said. So i know you mean Bowe is the one who had no confidence (binned his belt)? PED cheat, that gotta be Holyfield your referring to. Fight cheater, M Tyson the ear biter? Lacked talent, your a bit harsh on Lewis there he got sparked out twice by journeymen but he had some talent.

- - Monkeys always gonna gibber and drool over heavies, but AJ saved boxing by wiping out Haymon stables, unifying, putting 80+ crazed Brits in open air stadium fights, and passing on that legacy to Usyk and Ukraine where it rightfully belongs…duhhh…
People must understand that this "era" is over. Fury is done, Wilder is hardly top 5 guy, the same goes to Joshua. Usyk actually just lost to a fringe contender.

Three imposters. One was a PED and fight cheater with his fouls. One lacks a sack and has no confidence. The other one lacked talent and has yet to win a big fight. No need to mention names. They will all be gone soon. There is one legit fighter at the top and a lot of young talent behind him. Bring them on.
