Tim Tszyu is set to be elevated to WBO super-welterweight champion, with current undisputed king at 154-lbs, Jermell Charlo, to be stripped of his title.
The WBO confirmed the decision on Thursday, announcing Charlo would retain his title up to the time he fights Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 30.
Charlo, who has held all four belts at 154-pounds since defeating Brian Castano last May, is jumping up two weight classes for a shot at the undisputed champion at super-middleweight.
The Canelo-Charlo fight is being billed as "undisputed versus undisputed" and the WBO’s decision means it can remain as such, although the Texan will be relieved of one of his belts the moment the fight starts.
Per the WBO’s statement:
a) The WBO will sanction Canelo/Charlo scheduled for September 30, 2023, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
b) Charlo will be allowed to enter the ring as WBO Champion and be announced as such (WBO Jr. Middleweight Champion).
c) After Charlo enters the ring on September 30, 2023, and is officially introduced as WBO Jr. Middleweight Champion, his status and recognition as WBO Champion is terminated “Ipso Facto”.
d) After Charlo’s WBO Champion status and recognition is terminated pursuant to above mentioned section (c) this Resolution, Tim Tszyu will be automatically elevated from Interim Champion to Full Champion status.
The statement continued, revealing if Charlo doesn’t fight Canelo, his title with the WBO will be declared vacant and Tszyu will be elevated to champion.
