Canelo is outside his prime but why was he expected to stop Ryder?

It's not about Ryder. Remember, Canelo convinced Tony Weeks to rush in and stop Angulo, also durable, just off of basic punches landed. It's inconsistent: certain refs are too trigger happy to stop fights where others let guys get pummeled. I thought Ryder's corner should have stopped it after the 6 or 7th. At that point he landed flush on Canelo many times with no effect and he was getting pummeled and couldnt breath, having to swallow blood and then breathe through his mouth was sapping his energy. I guess they were really banking on a miracle that they could catch Canelo fading and yeah Ryder got a second wind but it wasnt near enough.

Ryder is a domestic level british fighter who is there to be hit, custom made for Canelo and he still couldn't stop him. Benavidez would stop Ryder in 3-4 rounds. Very true, just like he stopped Caleb Plant.

Canelo UD was 5/1 with the bookmakers. I knew John wouldn’t fold easily. Didn’t expect him to see the final bell after the early knockdown and facial damage though.

I know Ryder was stopped by Blackwell (a fight I've never seen) but what about Ryder ever told us he didn't have a good chin? He always seemed like a tough mfer to me. Yes, because this was a handpicked opponent. This was not a fight that boxing fans wanted to see. There was simply no demand for it. I doubt if it sold more than 300K PPV buys tonight. He could have easily fought a David Benavidez or a David Morrell but instead chose to fight an overmatched and over achieving Euro bum. Therefore, there was no excuse for him to not have knocked him out. If Canelo couldn't or wasn't going to stop him then there was no need to have picked him in the first place Mammoth after promising one.

It's amazing how much a year can change things. Going 36 rounds with GGG took more out of him than anyone realized. The Bivol fight didn't help either.

Because Canelo himself said he was injured in the Bivol and Golovkin fight and with his recent surgery, he said "expect something special" in this fight. He also KO'd most of the other champions at 168 and you would think Ryder's come forward, terrible footwork style would play into Canelo's hands. Ryder was gone but was fighting the fight of his life he was determined to go out on his shield, when a guy rises above his best like that they give great fighters problems, its all through history with every ATG having had it happen.

Bivol damaged Canelo. Fighting Benavidez would be suicide let alone Bivol rematch. He would have more chance with Benavidez because David would want to take him out, Bivol is happy to score points win by stick and move, Canelo is tough and hits hard which gives him a good chance with anyone in his weight class that wants to trade.

We have entered a silly age in boxing now where fighters are overrated if they don't knock everyone out. The fighters who are supposed to be all time greats had plenty of decision wins v fighters considered not on their level. Canelo has a 61% KO ratio. He isn't some Wilder or Beterbiev type. He's a decent puncher, nothing more and nothing less. Plenty of fighters can go 12 with him.

Going into the fight I thought it would be a decision win, but in the middle rounds when Canelo was teeing off with right straights that landed flush on Ryder's face I started to expect a KO. I guess it was a both Canelo losing a step and John refusing to go down.

There is no problem with Canelo going 12 rounds with Ryder. The problem is, Canelo gassed out again and looked bad in the last 4 rounds.

Ryder is tough I'll never know how he managed to lose to Jack Arnfield and got stopped by Nick Blackwell. Those 2 fights seem really at odds with the rest of his career. I know at some points during his pro career he was working in events security, even at boxing events, so maybe there was times he couldn't fully dedicate himself to train. He did also struggle at the weight. His other losses include 2 bad robberies v Callum Smith and Rocky Fielding and 2 legit losses v Canelo and Billy Joe Saunders, which there's no shame in at all.

Blackwell faced a Ryder physicality compromised fighting in a weight class he no longer belonged. Ryder is a very good, very tough fighter. I also expected the fight to do pretty much as it did.

Canelo is expected to stop Ryder because Ryder has never done anything of note. Add to the fact they put this fight behind 2 pay walls.......in his home town.
