In the past three years, we’ve had three championship matches in which the best fought the best and it ended in an upset victory for the challenger. The last upset produced the first undisputed champion that the division has ever seen in decades. And just when I was giving up hope on seeing Davis vs. Garcia happening, it then finally comes to fruition without needing to dangle any belts in front of their faces to make it happen. The amount of revenue it pulled in was more than 6x higher than the winner’s second highest-selling ppv bout.
Compare that to Welterweight, where the talent is there but the will is most certainly not. We are so goddamn close having an undisputed champ, all it would take is one fight between two of the best p4p boxers on the planet. And those guys just won’t settle on any sensible agreement even with the chance to be undisputed champ and the potentially massive revenues of cash for incentives. Instead of 12 rounds of them in the ring together, they force us to find excitement where there is none by teasing us with news of whatever’s going on at the negotiating table. And then there’s Jaron Ennis squandering his talent on dudes that nobody cares about instead of fighting top 10 ranked opponents. Same with Ortiz Jr. Good luck getting a fight between those two in our lifetimes.
Edit: I forgot to mention that next we’re about to see Loma challenge Haney for all the belts too. Out of all the glamour divisions, there truly is none that are more active than lightweight is right now
the show must go on, so much talent in boxing 154, 135, 168, 122 (Fulton vs Inonue)
if Spence vs Bud never happens it hurts them and their own legacy more than it does boxing as a whole if they don't want to fight then FOH and let Boots, Vergil Ortiz, Stanionis and the next crop of Welterweights fight it out and try to Undispute with each other
the 147 is being held up by these dudes come on already damn
Thank you! Finally!
they didnt fight at lightweight and like i said garcia hasnt fought there in 2 and a half years. do you really think someone should be ranked in a division in which they havent fought for 2 and a half years? you want a fact? tank just fought an unranked guy in a junior welterweigth fight with a rehydration clause.
Do you really think I care about any of that stuff? One of the most highly requested fights in boxing finally happened when I was ready to give up on the thought of it ever happening anytime soon. If all those little details about how the fight was set up really bugs you so much that you can’t take solace in the fact that it finally happened, then there’s nothing I can do to help you.
Also calling Garcia-Davis a sideshow and comparing it to Mayweather-McGregor is grasping at straws. The mere fact that you made that statement tells me you wouldn’t able to quantify what constitutes a sideshow.
In fact, this whole pointless argument you insisted on having really shows that you don’t know how to stop and consider the broader point and implications of what someone says. Hence, why you focus on these really obtuse gripes that you have with minor claims that I make off-handedly. Saying that the lightweight division is more active than the other glamor divisions or that it’s a good thing that Davis vs. Garcia happened shouldn’t be a hot take.

Also, one must factor in the former undefeated guys at Lightweight who are now vacating the 135 lbs division and moving up to the 140 lbs division because they all have Ls like:Teofimo Lopez, Rolly Romero and Ryan Garcia. It has become a glamour division like the welterweight division was during the 1980s.

Am I missing something here? Or is this just a case where because you don’t care about a matchup, you make the mistake of assuming that’s the default for everyone else. Again, this fight pulled in over $124 million in revenue. Way more than any fight they’ve had before.
a lot of people cared about floyd vs mcgregor. good matchup? no. matchup between top guys? no. i only care about competition. not sideshow fights
They are among top ten ranked lightweights in the world. Pretend all you want, that doesn’t that fact

including tank davis in any discussion about top fights being made is just downright silly.

garcia hasnt fought at lightweight in 2 and a half years. garcia wasnt a top guy there anyway so not sure what the big deal is fighting an unranked 140 pounder with a rehydration clause.

I’m well aware of both of those things. Looking forward to Loma-Haney, rooting for Loma, personally. But to bring up the catchweight Davis-Garcia misses the broader point; a real obtuse “trees before the forest” argument.

Two of the most popular lightweight boxers fighting after years of fans demanding to see it happen isn’t relevant to lightweight division…
Care to elaborate?

What should I elaborate? It was not a lightweight fight.
We have Haney - Lomachenko scheduled btw. The winner will be the king of division.

Tank and Garcia have done nothing at 135 for you to be crowing about.
They literally just had a super fight knowing the risks and not even having any belt as a reward. Do you think Ortiz Jr. and Ennis will go to the trouble of making that happen anytime soon? I mean, I sure as hell would love to see it, but if Spence and Crawford can’t even make it happen when all logical routes are leading them to each other, then why would Ennis & Ortiz be able to? Actually, why were Garcia and Davis able to make their fight happen before Spence and Crawford even though they had less to gain and more excuses for why they couldn’t make it happen?
