The broad consensus is that Haney is a big favorite over Lomachenko. And on paper, it makes sense. Young undisputed champion against an older fighter in his third weight class. The view seems to be that Haney will jab Lomachenko, control the distance, and frustrate him. But I think we need to take a closer look at things.
Lomachenko:
In his last fight, he fought Jamaine Ortiz. Ortiz had his moments, particularly early and in the 7th, but Lomachenko won a clear decision roughly 8-4 or 9-3. Here's the thing about Ortiz though. He fights at a very fast pace and moves all over the ring. Haney doesn't throw the combinations that Ortiz used to keep Lomachenko's hands at home and doesn't move as much. And Lomachenko won't be coming out of a literal warzone. We also can't forget that Ortiz was in training camp with Lomachenko for the Commey fight. Ortiz had already seen Lomachenko in the ring over countless rounds of sparring. So Ortiz had a familiarity that Haney won't.
Haney:
I know Haney has developed a reputation as this master defensive boxer and counterpuncher. But just three fights ago, he fought JoJo Diaz. With all due respect to Diaz, he's slow, weak punching, and hasn't a tenth Lomachenko's technical skills. Yet Diaz landed clean left hands on Haney's chin throughout the fight, as well as hard hooks to the body. Whenever Diaz got close, Haney either held or got hammered. Haney is extremely hittable in mid and close range.
Here are the timestamps in the video for what I am talking about.
Observe how easily Diaz counters Haney's jab with a left hand. 277s, 7m43s
And here we see Haney backing straight away and letting Diaz catch him with a left hook. 5m28s
This is not good defense. 8m43s
And finally, look at how easily Diaz hits Haney in close. 10m35s
Haney is massive, yes, but it's possible that the weight cut is hurting his chin and stamina. He never recovered after Linares hurt him in the 10th and while I don't know if he was hurt, he definitely looked bothered by Diaz, who couldn't punch at 126. And he was very tired towards the end of that fight, despite Diaz going long stretches without doing much of anything. And we know that Haney is not a puncher. He couldn't hurt the shell of Gamboa.
I suppose the question I have is: How is the fighter who was repeatedly caught by JoJo Diaz, who couldn't keep Diaz off, supposed to avoid Lomachenko's pressure? Maybe Haney has improved since the Diaz fights but the Kambosos fights don't tell us much because Kambosos fights nothing like Lomachenko. Maybe Haney actually attacks Lomachenko, but that carries its own risks. Recklessly attack him with the jab and he's liable to slip and counter with a left. Youth would matter more if Haney fought with the pace of a younger fighter. But he doesn't. Don't get me wrong: Haney can win this fight. But I don't see how the Haney who fought Diaz can be justifiably favored over Lomachenko.
Loma has been looking slower over his last 3 fights. I don’t see him speeding up.
He’s had over 400 fights. Lots of mileage on that body. I also predict a hugfest by Haney.
Fundora was just tall. He wasn’t actually big in weight. I question how strong someone’s legs and chin are if they’re 6’6” but fighting at 154lbs. What matters more is the fight night weight.
The Lubin KD and the Mendoza KO aren’t the last we will see of Fundora getting dropped at 154-160. He just isn’t very strong or powerful. You have a normal sized guy like Errol Spence destroying Ocampo in 1 round. Then you see this 6’6” dude going 12 rounds with the same guy. Styles make fights and all, but Fundora’s height is actually detrimental to him at these weights.
Haney is probably 150-154lbs on the night of the fight. I would be surprised if Lomachenko weighs more than 140lbs.
If Loma gives Haney any room to operate, it's going to be a long, boring fight.
Fundora has no clue how to utilize his advantages and probably never will.
Haney on the other hand seems like he can adapt ?
Soon all ?s will be answered :boxing:
I almost forgot who haney was mate. :haha:
You have a bad case of dumbfckitis.
Caused by not knowing shlt about anything and having lifetime memberships to multiple bandwagons.
Not curable, ''mate''.
loma is hard fight for anyone
i expect this to be a tough and close fight for both probably lean towards haney to win
he has youth on hes side compared to loma who could be tapering off hopefully he has one more big performance in him
i have never looked forward to a haney fight as much as this one
Tough fight for both. There’s no doubt about that. I rewatched the Haney x Jojo fight the other night and I called my brother like man we need to put a bag on Loma. Then I rewatched the Linares fight. What did I learn?
1) Haney doesn’t like fighting on the inside. His offense gets smothered and he’s not good at wrestling or jocking for position. I think that’s what fatigued him in the Diaz fight.
2) He has a pretty damn good jab. But he doesn’t look for more than one punch off the jab too often. Since the Linares fight, he’s not thinking about punching in combination for fear of getting hit between punches.
3) His lateral movement is decent and his ability to stay just out of distance of his opponents offense is above average.
My conclusion based on the aforementioned :
1) Loma is going to get up for this fight. Ortiz wasn’t a good measuring stick because the styles are different but so is the volume disparity. Loma will neutralize the jab by the halfway mark. He’s going to get on the inside. This is going to tax Haney’s mental stamina. Haney won’t have the steam down the stretch to slow that down.
2) Haney has good lateral movement and his instincts are to back up when someone throws vs slipping and countering. Loma is going to bait and feint Haney to death. Placing Haney in a position to stand his ground via clinch or counter. Or he will eventually start to fight off the backfoot. Not his strongest asset.
3) The intangibles; Loma’s likely last crack at undisputed. He’s going to be motivated to solve the puzzle. Top Rank needs those belts to stay home to setup a super fight between Shakur and Loma in a passing of the torch fight or classic rematch/trilogy type situation. But the belts stay home either way. Lastly, Haney’s is a super hard worker and talented. But his experience here is limited. And he’s a big boy starving on fight week…he’s going to be drained.
4) Loma by SD/UD.
Agreed. Loma looked good since the Teo loss and Ortiz had volume, knew him well and This was during Russia Ukraine war year. Why has everyone written off Lomachenko like he still aint thaat dude?

4) Loma by SD/UD.
You're not lying about Haney being vulnerable in large doses vs underwhelming opponents.
And theoretically, Loma should feast.
Loma couldn't feast vs Ortiz.
When did he last feast on a ''top'' opponent.
(Loma is just the guy to expose a ''top'' guy)
The 2nd 1/2 of the Teo fight was ''good'' but it's not as if he shut Teo out.
It was very odd seeing Loma ''fight'' like that in the 1st 6 rds.
Didn't see the Commey fight
How did he look ?
I'm still seeing Haney UD W
May the better man win
I see your point. But again, Ortiz was a high volume recent sparring partner. Haney probably can't throw that kind of output. We gotta remember, Lomachenko got shoulder surgery after the Lopez fight and Lopez has huge power. Haney doesn't.
Lomachenko got hit with some hard body shots from Commey, but quickly started countering right hands that fell short. Lomachenko could have stopped him but eased up after dropping him.

Doesn't look right but look what happened to Fundora

The view really is that Haney will jab and hug Lomachenko for 12 rounds and the ref will do nothing about it. Haney the Jr Middleweight, probably weighing in at 150-154lbs on fight night vs a 140lb Lomachenko. Nothing dangerous for Haney.
What would be dangerous for Haney is if he fights someone his own size who can punch.
Haney doesn't register on my fighters to watch list
But Loma has looked less dynamic of late.
If Loma wins, we can expect EmpiresFailing to disappear.
Worth rooting for :boxing:
I’m in agreement 120%
C’mon Loma
Loma to get rid of alts lol
I don’t doubt it
Here’s hoping that Loma takes Haney to school
Especially now that everyone thinks Haney is the best thing since sliced bread

I personally think it's going to be a split decision in favor of Haney...
But god damn it's really hard to tell what will happen! I just don't know what version of Loma is going to show up. Loma has everything to lose, I think more than Haney. His dream is to be undisputed champion and he knows this is his last chance. If Haney loses, he will still be a champion one day at either 140 or 147. One more loss for Loma at this stage could possibly be retirement? I don't see someone like Loma accepting being a gatekeeper. I think these are important factors to consider.
I think Loma has enough to win some rounds.
Maybe I'm on the Haney hype, but I can't see Loma beating him at this stage... He needs to look like the Loma from 2-3 years ago to make this happen.
I think Loma will pull some Jedi mind trick as his last hurrah
This is and will be his last chance for greatness
I've pepper sprayed crackheads who have more credibility than him.
I don’t doubt it
