I've seen majority of accusations thrown out by casuals recently, (mainly Loma fans) about Devin Haney being a weight bully and was thinking it about it logically.
How is Haney a weight bully when for the past 3 years 90% of contenders in the division has been virtually the same size in weight if not bigger (Richard Commey, Ryan Garcia, Luke Campbell, Jorge Linares, Tank, Teofimo Lopez, Frank Martin, Nakhatani, Pedraza, William Zepeda, Yoshino, Rolly Romero, Jamaine Ortiz, Keyshawn Davis?
By this logic Sweet Pea & Roberto Duran were weight bullies too?
Exactly. Weight bully and criticism of boxers that train and diet such that they stay in a weight class a long time are the 2 most annoying complaints on this site.
As long as guys hydrate legally I don’t GAF. If they’re using an IV then it’s weight bullying because it’s cheating IMO. Zurdo is a weight bully because I can’t think of a way to possibly add 30+ pounds hydrating in 24 hours
and yeah, most fans have an ulterior motive with their remarks. A guy is a bum for not fighting in six weight classes but he’s also a bum for staying in his division and cleaning it out.

Low IQ comment. You are unaware that they were still doing same day weigh ins when Robert Duran was at lightweight. The guys today are far larger than Duran was at 135.
No, but Tommy made weight same day
but I also haven't seen anyone call devin a bully. I think he gets a pass because he doesn’t have power. If he was hurting people though, the 24lbs hydration would be talked about more.
I’m just curious how he does it without an IV
True. Less rehydration time back then. If people make weight then they make weight as far as I'm concerned.
I’m more apt to use the term on someone who demands weight clauses (Canelo) than someone who does what they’re supposed to (Devin)

If you make weight, you made weight. Period. Weight bully is the term fans if losers use because their favorite lost.

We're people saying this soft ish in the Tommy Hearns days?

Pea and Duran did same-day weigh ins. Lets see Haney fight after a same day weigh in and THEN you can compare to those guys......
I definitely disagree with that. There was a reason why we used to have same-day weigh-ins. It's due to increased weight creating (1) greater punch power and (2) greater punch resistance. It's just the way physics work, and surprisingly, a little increase in weight goes a long way.
Andy Bowen, Daniel Marshall, tosh Powell, Frankie Campbell, Ernie Schaff, jack Holland, tiny scrapie, tony Marino, Peter asero, jimmy doyle to name a few. & the Korean fighter that fought Mancini. They are why same-day weigh ins stopped. People died.
It was very dangerous because boxers would try to cut a lot of weight, and without proper rehydration, you're at a greater risk for brain damage.
A fully rehydrated boxer is like having an egg in a glass of water. Shake the glass, the egg won't break. A dehydrated boxer's brain is an egg in an empty glass.
When you drain your body of all fluids, the fluids (mostly water) around your brain, that protects it, is dehydrated as well.
Mauricio Sulaiman in the video (1:00) had mentioned that Devin had rehydrated 24 pounds weight in a heated argument with Bill Haney, don't pay mind to the youtuber though he is overreacting and baiting for views like plenty of the boxing media.

Also Teo might be stockier in terms of physique but in overall size:

Yeah, that's nonsense. Do you believe Loma requested the franchise belt? He said he didn't.. but Sulamain said he did. Spence said he dropped 25 pounds..does that mean he needs to be fighting at 160/168?
We're people saying this soft ish in the Tommy Hearns days?
Day of the fight weigh ins makes your point about Tommy null at 147. In fact Tommy totally screwed himself over when he fought SRL, weighing in at 145 day of the fight.
Well I am not rooting against it since if he can make weight, but both Pernell Whitaker and Roberto Duran mostly had light frames during their lightweight career and then bulked up after they moved up.

Also they are likely pointing out that Devin Haney is the physically biggest lightweight at the current time and having had a bad weight cut in his last bout isn't a good look. By the way Ryan rehydrated up to 154 pounds against Fortuna and Devin rehydrated up to 159 pounds in the rematch with Kambosos if I recall correctly. Also, Teofimo rehydrated up to 147 pounds against Lomachenko. As for the rest I am not sure.
That was for the fight against Gamboa. We don't know what he weighed on fight night for Kambosos. He never revealed his weight. But if he did rehydrate 24 pounds for Gamboa, I wouldn't doubt that he's rehydrating even more these days.
Definitely isn't anywhere near physically the biggest. Commey, Ryan, Keyshawn to name a few are 'physically' bigger, but it means nothing. Teo was bigger than Haney was at 135, hence why he couldn't remain at the weight, heck Teo said in 2020 he'll be at 147 in the near future. Haney wasn't 159 pounds against Kambosos :lol1: I'll challenge you for a source, **** find me a source where/when Haney rehydrates to 155+?
4 weeks before the Linares fight he got on the scales and he was 144lbs, he stays in great shape. Can't criticise a guy because he 'looks physically bigger' - might as well argue with his parents and genetics. Makes no sense, shouldn't receive an ounce of criticism.

I think you're missing the point of the post. Virtually everyone at 135 rehydrates 10+ - singling & cherry-picking one or two names to fulfil an agenda is the issue. 90% of fighters in boxing rehydrate 10lbs+
Yeah. That's true. And I want to emphasize 10 pounds. Most people rehydrate around 10 pounds, between 8 and 12 pounds. The WBC revealed that Devin rehydrated 24 pounds before fighting Gamboa. That's TWICE THE NORMAL REHYDRATION AMOUNT. That's the epitome of being a weight bully. I mean, if he can do it and pull it off, then he gets my applause. The problem is going to be when he moves up in weight and everyone is his same size or bigger. What do you think is going to happen then? I think that relying on size, reach and weight advantages allows certain flaws the ability to continue being flaws for the fighter. You get to get away with more but eventually it catches up. We see this with both Garcia and Haney.
I definitely disagree with that. There was a reason why we used to have same-day weigh-ins. It's due to increased weight creating (1) greater punch power and (2) greater punch resistance. It's just the way physics work, and surprisingly, a little increase in weight goes a long way. There's a reason why Garcia, Haney and some others shrink themselves to fight at a lower weight than they should be fighting at, and it's in large part because of the inherent advantage you gain. You will usually have the greater reach, height and weight over the opponent. This is how you learn your craft and have as little risk as possible.
There's a science to shrinking yourself now. People have it down so that it's a science. Haney can safely make himself look like an extra in the Walking Dead and fight the next day. People couldn't do this in the past except by starvation, saunas and sweatsuits. Back when Duran would blow up, he'd have to lose that and fight on the same day. He likely lost to Leonard because of this, as well as the Puerto Rican guy, Wilfredo Benitez.
We all inherently know that when you get in a fight, you'd prefer to not have to fight someone who's bigger than yourself. It's instinctual because we know intuitively that we're at a disadvantage.
Weighing 10 pounds more than your opponent is not something anyone should dismiss. Ask a wrestler about fighting guys outside his weight class. They'll give you a good explanation as to the difference and how they're at a disadvantage. Anyone in combat sports knows.
TODAY is TODAY. Deal with it. Next people are going to complain about UNFAIR ADVANTAGES in height, power, weak chin or fast reflexes. Bunch of whiny babies now a days.
Weight bullying is most definitely a thing. Look at one of the more notorious cases with Gatti/Gamache. Huge discrepancy in weight between the two and it had an obvious impact. Of course more skilled fighters can negate the difference but fighters shouldn’t be rehydrating 30 lbs like Zurdo. Shit is insane. Some guys go to great lengths to make lower weights and definitely use the rehydration to their advantage. To act like the extra pounds doesn’t mean anything is stupid. Over time it’ll be a detriment and a health issue but it’s definitely something that can help fighters if their opponent doesn’t rehydrate as much.
