There's still unnecessary movement in nearly everything Jake throws, even his jab was telegraphed. Speaking of his jab, there were also instances where he moved his right hand away from his face when he threw it, leaving himself wide open for a counter. One of the reasons Jake doesn't have very good stamina is probably that he wastes so much of it overcommitting to his punches. Missing punches wears you out, and when you're putting everything in them and missing by miles, it takes a serious toll on you. I think I remember Tim Bradley once saying that he'd train a powerful boxer like they have no power, so that they wouldn't use it as a crutch. To me, Jake looked like his power took his focus away from his fundamentals and he paid the price.
As for what he did right, his sense of timing was alright when he wasn't trying to take Fury's head off. Some of his jabs snapped Fury's head back and he landed some good counter right hands; the jab that dropped Fury was magnificent, but that kinda timing was few and far between. When he wasn't trying to land home run shots, Jake could put together decent combinations. If he straightens his right hands and tightens his hooks, he'd have more energy left in his reserves to chain punches together more often. He showed a big heart good chin too; Dude was exhausted, eating lefts and rights, left, right and center. Last time a boxer ate like that was when Prince Nasim retired.
He's not bad for a novice, but these are things that I've noticed throughout his career, that haven't been addressed fully. Is he a better fighter now than he was starting out? Absolutely, but his technique shouldn't be this sloppy. You'd think with all this talk about him having an amazing team and so much money behind him, that he'd have more skill than that. Instead, he was in his biggest fight doing two-man shadowboxing with Fury at times.
He's definitely not terrible. Fury outboxed him in this fight, quite clearly.
But I will say - it's quite incredible that a YouTuber, who's only turned to boxing in the last few years, was hanging with a guy who's been boxing since he learned to walk. Tommy Fury is not a world beater, but boxing is in his blood. Jake Paul is a raw, but special athlete.
Boxing is a sport that requires a lesser amount of talent to succeed.
let’s be realistic… The likes of Wilder and Joshua picked up boxing after the age of 18 and become world champions
How many sports can you name where you can literally never do until adulthood and reach the top?
Outside of combat sports, I can’t think of any at all. So it doesn’t surprise me that someone athletic like Jake Paul could train properly for 3 years and look not too terrible.
Wilder won a bronze medal at the Olympics after boxing for 18 months. AJ won a gold medal after boxing about 2-3 years.
I know we love boxing but it’s fair to say it’s one of the only sports where you can pick it up so late and have success
He's a more polished Micky Rourke at this point in his career.
I expect JP to have just as much success.
As for Tommy....he really should stop trying to be fancy.
He's not good at it whatsoever.
Paul is awful, he just sets his feet and looks for the big right hand. That might work against washed up MMA fighters, but any average boxer will jab his nut in, just like Tommy did last night.
If I was his coach, I would tie his right hand behind his back (Figuratively, not literally speaking), and make him learn how to use a jab and a left hook.
This is what they shoulda been doing with Jake from the jump. The jab is the most important punch, and if Jake had a good one he might've won the fight handily. If they don't at least develop his jab, he might mess around and get stopped in the rematch.
The announcers kept wondering why Fury would keep moving into the side of Jake's right hand. It's not really rocket science. The only way Jake could've caught Fury if Fury was moving to his right, was if he turned/pivoted with Fury at the same time. Paul has no footwork, no jab, and no left hook so there was no real threat of Fury running into that punch. On the contrary moving to Jake's left would've kept Fury in the sight of Jake's right hand. Jake would have to throw the right hand more as a right cross as opposed to a straighter right hand, but that's an easier ask than wanting Jake to anticipate Fury ducking to his right, pivoting with him, and then trying to time his right hand to wherever Fury is gonna be.
Personally, I think it was more because Jake's right hands flew in all the way from Ohio lol. Fury wasn't worried about it probably because he could see them all coming a mile away.
If I was his coach, I would tie his right hand behind his back (Figuratively, not literally speaking), and make him learn how to use a jab and a left hook. It's nowhere to be seen. He uses his right as a crutch and you can see it from a mile away. Fury could basically freely ignore the threat of Paul's lead hand and just focus on ducking out the way of the right hand.

Seemed like he couldn’t avoid the jab to save his life. It’s very difficult to get anything started when you have a pesky jab constantly in your face, that was really the key to Fury winning the fight. Paul made no adjustments at all.
I find it ironic that Jake kept dropping his hands like Floyd but then eating a crunching jab afterwards lmao
its obvious that jake is surrounded by yes men in his camps, he is garbage and idk if he really thinks he will be champ someday or not but he is terrible.
I was confused, because I would always hear about him grinding in the gym and that he had the money for a great team, just to see him fight like Deontay Wilder minus the power. I'm very curious about his sparring sessions now, because I have a hard time believing that a competent sparring partner wouldn't catch him in between all those helicopter punches.
I realized that Fury was going to box his ears off the first 30 seconds, jake tried to feint but fury didn't even flinch, probably because jake was way out of range and fury instinctively realized it. fury had far superior control of distance, far sharper jab, crisper punches all around, didn't load up all the time, far better stamina, and also some punch variety, getting some uppercuts in there ect.
Don't get me wrong, Jake wasn't bad for a guy with 8 fights and no amateur experience, but most fighters with 8 bouts don't have the resources that Jake does. Telegraphing everything, not tucking his chin, dropping his hands, not mixing up his punching speeds, smothering his own work, etc. If Jake wants to win the rematch, he's got a lotta work to do.

the only real improvement he has made recently is his stamina since woodley 1 has improved. he can now atleast go 8 without being out on his feet at round 5.... but it still takes him a ton of hugging to get there.

jake has a sloppy left hook and a terribly telegraphed overhand right. ever since he knocked out late 30s wrestler woodley with that overhand right when woodley was tired late just standing in front of him, he thinks its going to happen again, and he overuses it and telegraphs it badly. Fury is a D level fighter who just has some instincts from starting boxing atleast as a teenager and he slipped that right over and over again. the few times jake did land tommy took them well, it shows that jake's supposed power based of hurting smaller wrestlers and an NBA midget was way overrated.
He's just fought his first boxer. Undercard is exactly where he should be.
You can't blame the guy for being a headliner. He made that happen through things outside of boxing.
As a boxer, his ability is about where you'd expect. So is T.Fury's for that matter.
There are guys you can tell after 9-10 fights that they might climb the stairs to a legit level without even come to contender status... Tommy didn't show that yet and I don't think he will... Such is life...
No... The Youtube Fraud isn't "terrible"... Just very bad... Like 7:00 PM undercard bad...
