First of all, this isn't a thread bashing Crawford himself because he did nothing wrong. The issue is with the commission overseeing the event and the officials at ringside.
How is it that in 2022 a fighter's gloves can split open with the padding visibly protruding from the tear and nothing be done about it? The ref certainly knew because she called a timeout at the beginning of the sixth round specifically to bring it to the attention of the ringside officials as shown in this picture.

Both gloves were split. The right glove's padding can clearly be seen here and the left glove's seam was split open down the left side although no padding was spilling out. You can make it out on this picture but it blends in with the guy's red t-shirt.
Obviously in this situation a timeout needs to be called and the gloves replaced altogether. It's mandatory to have a substitute pair available in the event of something such as this, so there can be no excuses. They didn't even tape them up. The loose padding could have scraped somebody's eyes during a punch or anything.
The worst part is, this wasn't some shady unlicensed show in front of a hundred people, it was a high profile bout under the cameras and when the ringside officials were notified they did absolutely nothing and just let the fight continue as normal. Disgraceful is an understatement.
When the show is so cheap that you have Cyborg as the co-main, this is what happens.
The guy on the left in the photo is literally laughing.
Now waiting for that cheque to bounce.
For them to say "we'll do it after this round" is ridiculous. Either it needed to be done or it didn't. When the padding is spilling out of the glove there is no judgement call to be made, it's cut and dry, black and white, the gloves must be replaced before the fight continues. Does anyone think it would have played out this way if this was Crawford versus Spence?
The fact that Avanesyan was knocked out cold from a right hook in the meantime is just the icing on the cake. Personally I don't believe the gloves played a factor in the knockout, but I certainly wouldn't blame Avanesyan or his team if they chose to protest the outcome on those grounds because they have a legitimate cause for contention.
they can call a time out for the replacement. replacementin this case is the only option. Only putting tape on the punching surface could cause his opponent cuts. Doing nothing could cause his opponent cuts, cause excess damage to either the opponent or crawfords hands or both.
Well they had officials that reviewed the damage and everyone decided to do the round as the replacement was collected. But I’m sure you know best.
They were getting replacements for when the round ended. Otherwise the break would’ve been too long.
