All the talk on the LDBC style message boards, comment sections, and videos right now is hyping up the “new” Wilder.
Supposedly, Wilder hasn’t peaked yet and the Helenius fight showed that he is still getting better, stronger, faster, and more dangerous.
That he will stay at his better lighter weight (around 215) and beat everyone in the HW division. That Fury doesn’t want the smoke, and is terrified of Wilder. That 215 Wilder that beat Helenius, does the same to Fury.
Some may laugh, but please discuss and separate the grains of truth from the hype machine.
My biggest questions are, is Wilder, at almost 37, really getting better? Few are Hopkins and Mayweather. Is he one of that type of fighter?
Secondly, do you think he will really have a second run and rule the heavyweight division in the near future?
If not, then who will? Fury is also older and has more wear (not just from a longer amateur and pro career, but also from wild living), and Usyk also is old and literally probably got PTSD now.
Thanks for the replies.
I don’t get why Wilder is so polarizing. Either he’s the king and could beat anyone. Some even claim he beat Fury and was cheated — three times (long count, first fight. Weighted gloves, second fight. Long count, third fight).
Others claim he is absolute dog shit and has only ever fought tomato cans, except for Fury.
I am somewhere between the two about him.
I think he couldn’t have held a candle to Ali. I think Mike Tyson would have had his number, and likely the Klitschkos and Lewis as well. But other than Fury, I’m thinking he has at least a fifty fifty shot with any other heavyweight. Usyk could possibly beat him, but I have a feeling a fight between them would look a lot like Joe Louis vs. Billy Conn (Usyk in the role of Conn). Joe Joyce would be a great opponent, and I don’t think Wilder could floor him the way he did Fury. But I have a weird feeling Wilder might get the stoppage on cuts or something bizarre like that.
And I think a part of the oddness of it allis many of Wilder’s hardcore fans go beyond ethnic pride and it’s almost like his successes are an extension of themselves, a feeling of strength to see him knocking guys out left and right, and a feeling of victimhood and being wronged whenever he loses. It’s quite the phenomenon, as I don’t see that on any other level with any other African-American boxers. (To be fair, I am half Mexican and sometimes Mexicans can go overboard with the boxing ethnic pride, too.)
It is the same sh.it as the new Canelo. Canelo is the new only when he fights Plant. When he fights Bivol, he is not the new "destroyer" Canelo.
Give Wilder the legit guy that is not totally washed up, and he will look like a garbage again.
How about Sanchez?
Lol he came in near that weight for many other fights
He's a one trick pony
Have him fight wallin joshua ortiz
They all on similar level to wilder imo
B, b-,
He’s exactly the same fighter IMO. Flawed in many ways but has the ultimate equaliser in the form of his right hand. I’m not sure any other current HW beats him not named Fury.
