I was amazed how good Toney was. Mcallum I always knew about. Both guys were technical, powerful, accurate, fast. Textbook boxers.
And yes, better than the trio in the 80s IMO.
What say you guys?
Yes, you're crazy.
Tony lost to Tiberi & got a gift decision out of it.
McCallum's reputation as a "boogeyman" is overrated.
He was a full generation behind Leonard & Hearns and a full decade and some change behind Duran.
Now could he have beaten some of them, especially Duran when Duran was past his prime and he was in his?
Yes, but he wasn't better than any of them and none of them "ducked" him.
With today's day before the fight weigh-in, I don't think there's a welter in history who would be favored to beat Tommy. He'd have beaten SRL anyway if he had not fcked up and come into a 147 fight at 145.
I don't think that would have made much difference in the first fight.

And imo he won the rematch.
Respect your opinion but imo Toney was better than Tommy. I’m not hating or trolling.
Fair points regarding the McCallum/Toney fights

Respect your opinion also.
But how could you possibly think that? I don't see any logical way that's possible.
Toney could have been so much better if he had more discipline. He didn't keep his weight and stamina under control. He had a good run when he out-boxed Jirov and Holyfield and then went on to beat Ruiz, only to have it all pulled for a failed drug test. That failed test begs the question...how long was he juicing and did that give him the edge in his prior victories? There will always be a cloud of speculation hanging over his head. Of course the same can be said for "Evan Fields".
Regardless, he was not on the level of Duran or Leonard. Closer to Hearns I would say, but I still give Hearns the edge.
How on Earth is James Toney better than Tommy Hearns?
And a passed prime McCallum arguably beat Toney twice. He definitely had a better career then Toney.

Part of being great is consistency. You could have all the talent, but if you're inconsistent, then you'll fall short in situations that are in your favor from a talent perspective.
And this was the case for James Toney. He had ATG skills, but you never know which James will show up. James does whatever he wants to do, and that was his greatest weakness. We've seen him catch L's against MUCH lesser fighters because he's just lazy af
Hes just not up there with any of the 4 kings of the 80's imo because of that
Or maybe he’s just not that good?
Yes you’re crazy. Toney is better than Hearns imo. But not Duran Or Leonard. McCallum isn’t better than any of them.

The Fab Four are already criminally overrated. Skilled modern fighters would whoop them.
o.
Honestly we gotta watch what we say.
Nobody is just whooping any of those guys in their prime. You think they haven't faced skilled fighters in their era.
Hell Srl put a "whooping" on Floyd Sr. Floyd Sr. had skills. Floyd Sr. didn't make it to the final bell and he still making up excuses for that thrashing

Yes, you're crazy to think something so asnine.
McCallum was great, but not on their level.
James Toney is no where even remotely close to their level especially the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran who are two of the greatest fighters of all time. Toney isn't even near the Top 100.
Toney lost more times than i can count. He lost to actual journeymen when in his prime but got robberies. He most certainly isn't close to those guys. Then you add in the two times he was caught with steroids. I don't rate Toney that high. Very good fighter, but that's it with me. I don't consider him to be great.
McCallum was quality. Very underrated and avoided when he was around. But still not on the level of those guys.
I think you should look into Duran's Lightweight resume. It's full to the brim of world class fighters. People really don't know how good his resume is in just that division. Everyone though should know the fighters Leonard and Hearns beat. They're talked about enough.
All in all, i think you're on your own here.
