Stevenson's KO percentage is 47%, you realize he is early in his career at his original weight class, fought all the bums on the way up for stay busy fights and his percentage is that fuking low. You realize that it will only get lower from here right? He is going to be a literal Paulie Malinaggi 2.0 by the time he gets to 140.
I prefer skillful boxers over just power punchers. But I prefer to see some power with those skills. Mayweather’s 27-0, 21 KO’s at 130 was a thing of beauty. His going up in weight and not having that pop anymore didn’t even matter. He had already shown us what a beast he was if he fights guys his own size.
But Featherfisted boxers end up getting in even more trouble when they step up to elite punchers. Malignaggi, Algieri, Peterson come to mind. They could fight someone they are more skilled than, and still end up getting walked over.
It’s going to be a while before we see Shakur take on a legitimate elite puncher because Arum is going to Arum. We will see Shakur vs an aging Lomachenko. We may even see Arum go outside of TR and make Shakur vs Kambosos, another light puncher.
But it’s highly unlikely that we see Shakur vs Tank or Garcia, because Arum is going to blame Eddie Hearn and DLH of being difficult when he’s the most difficult promoter to deal with. We may not even see Shakur vs Haney, another light puncher, because again, Arum is gonna Arum.
Shakur will be brought up like Terence Crawford. Good fighter, but will be matched to look like a superhero.
You hit it right on the nail. As long as Arum and the culture of doing business he created still exists we won’t see these mega fights with opponents from other promotional companies.
Firstly, Arum will only do it if the profile matches or exceeds one of a Fury-Wilder level.
Secondly, he won’t have to…Haney is going to vacate all the belts at 135 and TR will grab at least two of them and that will keep Shakur happy for a while.
Thirdly, Shakur doesn’t have the fighting style to become more than an Andre Ward. 135lbs is going to be even less entertaining to the casual fans because all this talk about man strength and growing into power is bro science. Like you said Floyd for as brittle and ectomorphic as he was, was a killer at 130.
Shakur hasn’t demonstrated that natural strength or finishing ability in lesser and smaller opponents. He’s not going to do it in larger and more elite ones.
I do believe him and Loma is a ppv worthy fight for true boxing fans.

Floyd was knocking dudes out at 130 and 135 Shakur can't even do that. And he isn't as skilled as Floyd or Whittaker even though he's a great fighter
Thank you! I think we need to call a spade a spade. He’s a great boxer but he isn’t naturally strong. He’s going to do well by his boxing intuition and catching opponents with shots they don’t see coming.
He switched his style after the criticism during the fight with the Nakatalia guy and started staying in the center of the ring and walking people down. Even so, he’s not going to get stoppages because he sits back and admires himself too much.
IF YOU DON’T HAVE POWER YOU HAVE TO THROW COMBINATIONS TO STOP OPPONENTS!
At 135, I anticipate he will be back on using his footwork more because there are some strong fast twitchy guys up there. Robson was able to tag him up pretty good and that’s only because he wants to get the stoppage or at least appear entertaining. To beat Loma, he will have to be way more dynamic. Especially being that Loma will be motivated because after the Teo fight Shakur said he fought scared.
I’d pay double to see that fight.
Shakur has to stop talking and get to work.
Shakur looked very sharp beating valdez, the guy he was supposed to beat unlike canelo beating ggg by looking sloppy and tired. Canelo couldn't finish an old fart who is right there to be abused, so what's your point?
Stfu b.tch. nobody likes you
Valdez isn't a pressure fighter. Being the smaller counter puncher Valdez had no chance. GIven Valdezs vulnerable chin/ring wars and Shakurs pedigree one would think Shakur would've finished him.

Yall act like power is the key to greatness when it clearly isnt.
Everybody yall love with power always get they a$$ whooped when they fight elite boxers.
Floyd and sweetpea did just fine without punching power as they moved up.
Skills over everything

If he is featherfisted, valdez would have walked through him, but valdez did nothing.

What he doesn't have in power he has it with sharpness with his counters or combinations.
He hits hard enough that especially when they don't see the counter that the fighters have to think on their way in.
His defense and accuracy discourages his foes.
Stevenson is far from boring, he is featherfisted though.
Haney is both featherfisted and boring. I wouldn’t clump those two together.
I agree but I see other people saying those things about them.
Thing is he hasn’t even fought elite fighters yet. His weak punching power has been vs good, decent and poor opposition. But not elite.
True, none of the featherweights actually got a belt even now, plus Jamel Herring was pass it and while Robson Conceicao is difficult to hit, he is very vulnerable of getting hit flush because he leaves his chin untucked and rarely uses a proper high guard.
Plus his offense is not that good when can he only throws looping punches.
Luis Coria knocked him down twice who lost to Adam Lopez and featherweight Enrique Vivas.

Valdez is a good win but you imagine that it would be 50/50 fight against some like JoJo Diaz you can't exactly say he is an elite fighter.
JoJo isn't a pushover, but he is a very beatable fighter.
Well he does have power, but he is unable to stop the elite opponents he has fought so far even if he has knocked them down and hurt them in multiple occasions.
His top wins at featherweight are Joet Gonzalez and Christoper Diaz who are not outstanding, he stopped either.
He dominated Nakathila, Oscar Valdez and Robson Conceicao, he hasn't stopped none of them neither.
He knocked out Jamel Herring whom he sparred a lot with as a former stablemate. However, it took 10 rounds and 1 out of 6 isn't sufficient.
At least we will see if his power gets better at lightweight.

He is quite light hitting for an elite level boxer. I think people fixate a bit too much on power anyway. Stevenson hits hard enough to win fights.
Some people use the "feather fisted" and "boring" labels against guys like Stevenson and Haney because they don't like them and it's one of the only criticisms they can come up with. Other people genuinely don't appreciate certain styles of fighters. Some people only like aggressive fighters, knockout artists etc. Other people can appreciate defense and other skills.

Regardless of other reasons, if you just look at most any fighter in any weight class they normally have a higher KO percentage as a blooming fighter than an older fighter, due to the matchmaking in the early period of their respective careers. They are fed lower tier opponents to get the easy KO and build up their record. Stevenson is sharp as hell, but he does lack power right now. It may be something a new trainer may hone into, but he is just sharp at tagging the target now; not really punching through the target…if that makes any sense.
Regardless if he punches like Paulie Malinaggi or Tim Bradley, he will be able to keep a good record and excel in the sport, as long as he stays focused. If he fails to stay defensively aware with the lightweight crop that is available, he could see an L or 2. :boxing:

Floyd and Sweepea were fighting elite fighters when they moved up. I like Shakur, but he's not even stopping B level fighters.
He doesn't have to have 1 punch KO power but he can't stop guys after beating them up for extended periods. I love Shakur but it's gonna be a problem at lightweight and higher

Why does Shakur have this stigma of being pillowfisted when he's hurt everyone he's been in the ring with as a 130 pounder? | BoxingScene Community
