As a boxing fan I LOVE this fight.... love my fellow countryman Beterbiev, but also rooting for Joe. This is definitely a can't lose fight for a boxing fan.
Was also quite surprised that this was regular TV... not PPV.
Then I was further shocked that this was not at MSG, but at the small MSG Hulu Theater, and PLENTY of tickets still available for as low as $40.
a 3 belt unification at the freaking Hulu Theater? on Free TV?
Meanwhile, we have garbage Tank fights on PPV.
Is Top Rank just not marketing these fighters? Or Do people just don't give a crap about Artur and Joe?
Matchroom was able to fill the main MSG with Taylor/Seranno.....
Honestly, it has about the same level of promotion and hype as Beterviev v Gvozdyk.
Which is a shame, because Gvozdyk sent Adonis Stevenson into retirement and almost sent him to the morgue. His fight vs Beterbiev should have been huge, yet somehow, I hardly heard anything about it.
Oh, my bad! Too bad he didn't sign him sooner.
He was with chit head Yvon Michel before that
Gym to be precise and he did fugh all for Artur
Not sure why they didn’t take advantage of the fact that Grand Prix is in Montreal and the fight would of sold itself
I know what you're saying, but Bob could have spent a little more to promote Beterbiev when he was younger and KOing everyone. For some reason, he decided not to do it, perhaps as you say, he didn't feel like Artur nor the LHW division was marketable. the same lack of promotion was the case with Crawford, whom Arum also claimed was unmarketable. I do understand that Bud has a pretty dry demeanor which doesn't attract attention, but shouldn't a master promoter like Arum have strategies for fighters like that- Sensational in the ring but lacking in personality and self-promotion skills?
Bob only signed Artur recently. I think the Hot Rod fight was his first with Top Rank.
Boxers are like singers - sometimes a terrible singer will come out, but the public decides they like their voice and the singer becomes a star. Meanwhile someone might come out who is technically a great singer, but people just don't think their voice is interesting and they end up waiting tables.
You have to have starpower to cross over. Neither of these guys have it.
Because for it to be a huge event you need it to crossover to the casual fan . The casual fan does not know how either one of these guys is, I am personally looking forward to this one :boxing::boxing:.
I have a theory on this. I believe Bob knows the market, he's a genius at this stuff.
1. There are a few historically less popular divisions throughout history. In this order imo =---> Cruiser, SMW, and LHW.
I know SMW has been better since the Super 6, but history wise it's been dead more than it's been not. LHW is the more popular of the bunch, but I don't think most people outside of boxing gearheads think about that division much. It's very fringe.
2. Reiterating, the Russia thing.
3. Beterbiev has little to no future. Let me explain =---> he's 37. Up until 2019, who's really heard about Beterbiev? Most recognizable name on his record is Cloud. Most people probably see him as another Russian who's beating up nobodies and we're watching and waiting. To no fault of his own, just circumstance right?
So hypothetically let's say he runs through Smith, Ramirez, and Ramirez =---> where does he go from there and how old is he then? Even those fights, how sellable are they to the public? Who's going to pay 69.99 ppv for Beterbiev vs Bivol?
Say he beats them all, is Canelo going to jump into that Sarlacc Pit? No! Is Beterbiev going to move up to a no money CW division or chance it all moving down which is surely suicide? Maybe go nuts and try a HW run and a la Usyk??
To be honest, Bob keeping his costs down and just observing the market as Beterbiev moves along is a pretty smart move. If he see's on opportunity to strike, I'm sure he will. But to friviously spend on something that there is a high probability of little returns isn't a dumb move and to me doesn't make him cheap.

...because it is Light Heavyweight
this Division just never been respected honestly going all the way back to Spinks ERA when he was king but nobody cared because all the attention was on Hagler at the time, 4 King and if Ray was going to come back and fight Hagler
so yeah Boxing have these Divisions that unfortunately not a lot of people care about and 175 always been one of them
it’s no coincidence that in the first episode of the ESPN hype show they mentioned Beterbiev was a Canadian citizen :lol1:
Mauricio Sulaiman: "He has been in Canada for 15 years, he lives in Canada, his children were born in Canada, he has a Canadian passport and Canadian residency and a boxing licence from Canada,"
Canadian ... ;)
It ‘s Just the way the cookie crumbles
But the few casuals who fall on this , will become fans
Maybe the Bobfather is building up Beterbiev by keeping this free
I’m quite certain that Bivol’s name will be mentioned often
Because WE, the Canelo fans, are waiting for one of them to win to seek and destroy them! We are going to destroy Beterbiev, then Usyk! Canelo is a God!
Considering Russia is blowing up Ukranian children and pregnant mothers in schools and hospitals at the moment, not a great sell right now in the States know what I'm saying?
A Russian killer who's like a 9-1 favorite against a construction worker, yea 40 bucks sounds about right.
Damn, I forgot about Beterbiev likely not getting love because of Putin's ignorant ass. Besides that, Artur has not been exactly built up and given a lot of promotion. He's kind of this silent killer that only die hard fans have even heard of. Cheap Unca' Bob hasn't put forth much effort at all to promote this fight. If it weren't for BS, how many of us would even know about it?

Boxing is marketed to casuals. If you made a stacked card full of fights that actual fans wanted, it would do 40k buys.
it’s why Canelo/Feilding did better than Beterbiev//Bivol would do
Its about as big as i'd expect it to be. Its not like either guy is all that well known and they dont talk a lot of shyt etc etc. Its not a fight for the casuals.

one of the best matchups of the year!!
They're not big names. Beterbiev is not a very active fighter, never became a big name and he may already be past his best. Smith is also not a big name, has been outboxed a few times, and he lost to the other champion in the division. This is still a good fight, but not PPV worthy. Hopefully it turns into a fire fight quickly.
Great points.... Artur is mostly a Canadian name and Smith, while being an exciting boxer was not built into something BIG and scary.
