Very interesting article in the Sunday Times about DAZN.
How long can this continue? Blavatnik will eventually pull the plug.

PBC never claimed “PPV is dead”. I’m British so PBC doesn’t really effect me. Fights like Thurman-Barrios, Ortiz-Martin etc being on PPV is disgraceful though.
PBC may not have used those those exact words, but they broke their promise of no extra fees boxing to US fans and you know it. Stop playing silly semantic games. You say that doesn't affect to you because you're British, so why the hell are you crying about DAZN's US PPVs?
DAZN havn't broken any promises to you, so lay off your fake bleating.
It's clearly not sustainable kafkod, and you know it.
That Russian is having to pour billions of his own money in just to keep the company afloat, it won't last forever.
Sorry lads, I'm just a realist.
Asking whether a cash injection into a business is sustainable is the wrong way of thinking about it. It should be clear to anyone with a brain in his head that Blavatnik isn't planning on pouring money into DAZN forever. The business took a hit because of the Covid restrictions so the owner is bailing them out. He obviously believes it's a worthwhile investment and he's in a better position to know about that we are.
i think you’re right, I can see them being out of boxing soon
I know they do well in Japan, Italy, Germany etc, I think they have rights to some football in Italy and Germany, as well as other territories. In a lot of their territories they have rights to La Liga, Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, Champions League etc.
They even have rights to WWE wrestling in some countries, which is probably decent business
they’ve been going 6 years already and acquired some major rights in some territories, and that’s growing in some countries. Having the likes of Serie A and Bundesliga in their respective countries is probably just as good as having Premier League in England, so that’ll keep them in business if they renew all those rights.
I could see that they might eventually start going back to limited countries being able to use DAZN, or it’ll end up like BoxNation, still there but no new content.
I can’t see them keep pumping money into the UK and US market if they don’t acquire major sports, and it doesn’t seem they can anytime soon. I think they were banking on that BT deal for the UK. So if they stop investing in the UK and US, that really means boxing out of the equation too
But anyway let’s be real, they’ve already done a huge U Turn on their business model and started introducing PPV in the USA, the UK will follow soon as long as they’re still in boxing, that’s obvious. That’s because their business model/selling point was either never honest or not sustainable, probably both.
I completely agree. They’ll be able to turn a profit on other sports, they clearly can’t on boxing. It’s a no brainer. As Blatvanik said he’s a “disciplined investor” he’s not gonna keep losing money.

I doubt that you or anybody else posting in this thread - including me - knows whether DAZN's business model is sustainable or not. But I do know that boxing is a worldwide sport and there are a hell of a lot of potential subscribers in that list of countries.
Boxing is a niche sport in every country in the world. It’s not a sustainable product.
So what makes DAZN any different from all the other platforms who sell PPVs for big fights? How are they "out to make a quick buck" while all the others are "investing in the sport"?
I know you're a UK fan, like me, which makes your comment even more baffling, as DAZN haven't made any fights PPV in the UK.
Canelo vs Bivol was screened live on DAZN at no extra cost to UK subscribers. Canelo vs Plant was PPV on BT. And trust me, neither BT nor Sky sell PPVs to make money to invest in the sport. They do it to make money for themselves.
Which other platforms proclaimed “PPV is dead”?
Consumer trust is important. They lied to us.
Did u do the same w/pbc? Free boxing turned into multiple ppvs a year. Martin/Ruiz anyone?
PBC never claimed “PPV is dead”. I’m British so PBC doesn’t really effect me. Fights like Thurman-Barrios, Ortiz-Martin etc being on PPV is disgraceful though.
He’s not even good at hiding pretending to just be doing a random article he found . These guys jump at every chance they get at platforms Fury isn’t associated with and makes ignore lists when truths are told . :lol1:
You’re hurt. DAZN is a dead app. Deal with it bro.
Don’t understand why posters don’t proof read things and follow a clear what seems to be a sort of doom and gloom view from the author instead when the article itself lays out its profit of over a billion dollars and structure how it’s still growing despite set backs .
Where did the article say that? I saw it say there was a pre-tax loss of over a billion dollars in 2020.
Forget Boxing, I think what Fans do, particularly Boxing Fans, some of you think that Bashing DAZN is bashing Eddie Hearn and the fighters who fight on it. NO! Eddie is the best Promoter in Boxing I will never take anything away from him as a Promoter as F^cking Annoying as he is BUT I think the jump from SKY to DAZN will prove to be a HORRIBLE Decision and I think you're already seeing it with him crying about the Lack of Coverage from SKY for I think it was the Katie Taylor fight or something
Len ultimately just sells this to the highest Bidder (Discovery) and try to recoup whatever he can from this HORRIBLE INVESTMENT! As much as I LOVE BOXING, I would NEVER try to use this sport to build up a Subscription base for a APP knowing how Fickle Fight Fans Are. DAZN US was never going to work without the rights to the richest and the most popular sport in America which is NFL FOOTBALL! They don't even have rights to NFL or MLB Games which are the other popular Sports in America. Boxing as a whole is not that popular only Certain fighters are so this was just a TERRIBLE INVESTMENT and the Roll Out to America was even worse because they came over here with Eddie Hearn of all people instead of doing it with an American like Bob Arum, Al Haymon, Oscar De La Hoya or hell even Lou DiBella (who helped Build HBO Boxing/TVKO back in the day)

I guess I’m one of the few who has ALWAYS been concerned about the corporate boxing phenomena.
Im waiting with bated breath too hear all the boxing fans with masters degrees in business opinions on this subject.

I find it mind boggling.
I’m now watching cards nearly every week - We’ve got the Munguia and Kyoguchi fights this weekend.
I can watch HD fights the following day with no spoilers. On my phone if I’m out.
For a boxing fan it’s awesome.
Failing to get BT was a massive blow. That could have been a problem solver. DAZN are f***ed IMO. I almost guarantee they’ll no longer be involved in the sport in 5 years if not less. Nothing against them, I actually liked the concept but they backed the wrong horse in Hearn and the model they created was completely unsustainable.

It's a lot of money, but I don't see them pulling the plug anytime soon.
Not bad, even if it only fills the gaps other platforms don't care covering.
Who would forget that fans use to get one fight a month, sometimes months?
Nowadays it's almost every week.
The moment they contradicted themselves with the whole PPV thing I stopped rooting for them tbh. It soon became clear they were looking to make a quick buck from boxing rather than invest in the sport.
