This being the champ Joe Calzaghe’s 50th birthday , the best super middleweight ever , who moved up to light heavyweight to defeat two of the greatest ; Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins
My question to you is how would Joe defeat Canelo
Would he have any problems doing it
Would this be a classic in your opinion
Sol is a fantastic fighter, however the only reason he's having any success in the higher weights is purely because they lack killers.
Joe would of been way to much for sol to handle. High volume punching from every angle possible whilst moving in any direction.
Valid points , nice breakdown
Thanks, and thank you for posting on Calzaghe’s birthday. I wouldn’t have known. I’ll have to re-watch one of his fights today in honor of the occasion.
I like Joe for his win against Jeff Lacy but don't hold much stock into his RJJ and Bhop win. Even Bhop dropped him. He won off activity against aging fighters far removed from their best.
Still, he retired undefeated, so I don't know, I guess that means, he's GOAT?
Not sure about stopping him, Calzaghe was very tough. If he couldn’t stop the likes of Jacobs, Chavez, Cotto who had all been stopped before, I highly doubt he stops Calzaghe. Even the BJS was a freak injury stoppage from a shot, he never looked like he could ever deck him. He hit Callum Smith at will sometimes and never really hurt him. Canelo’s single punch power isn’t all that, The only people he’s really hurt badly and put on the deck with a single shot are mostly people have been stopped before by even lesser fighters. He can break fighters down like plant, but I think Joe was much more durable and better than Caleb Plant and I don’t think Canelo would be able to wear him down like that, I don’t think stylistically the fight would play out like that.
Canelo could win the fight, it wouldn’t be a forgone conclusion by any means but I’d say it would be more like an 8-4/7-5 kind of win, maybe along the lines of Canelo v Jacobs in terms of scorecards and competitiveness.
One thing I’ll say is if Canelo couldn’t get to grips with Calzaghe that well, he would struggle keeping up with that work rate.
All speculation of course, we’ll never know.
I just have a feeling Calzaghe would really struggle with the pressure and inside game of Canelo. I think Canelo would be able to get inside and break him down. Maybe I’m underestimating Joe’s ability and toughness but as you said all speculation.
If it went the distance I imagine you could make a case for Calzaghe getting the nod due him out working Canelo in the majority of rounds.
Way to many times did I think Joe would of tasted defeat and he proved me wrong
How do you think Canelo would deal with the overwhelming amount of punches coming his way ?
Canelo doesn’t like working for the whole 3 minutes
One thing you have to factor in with Joe is he always found a way. People like to talk about the filler in his resume but he beat a lot of good fighters too.
I imagine Canelo would be taking a lot of punches on arms and gloves, if it went to the distance I could see the decision being very controversial with Calzaghe having far greater output but Canelo having far greater accuracy.
This is the third or fourth time I’ve responded to a Canelo vs Calzaghe thread. My answer isn’t changing. Calzaghe has too much speed, volume, movement, and stamina for Canelo. If Canelo’s game has any weaknesses, they are his feet and his cardio. Those are two places you can’t be lackluster against Joe. Joe wouldn’t do Canelo quite as badly as he did Jeff Lacy, but that is about how it would go.
Happy Birthday Champ!

Can’t see myself Canelo stopping Joe
Really doubt it
But I do see Calzaghe defeating Canelo just by overworking him
I think Canelo stops Joe. Technically superior and Joe didn’t have a strong inside game, I think it’s a favourable matchup stylistically for Canelo.
