Ukraine also agreed to give up its nuclear weapons in the mid 90s in return for Russia, the UK and the US signing a pact agreeing to respect their borders as they stood at that time and never to use nukes, or the threat of nukes, against them. Putin broke that pact by annexing Crimea, broke it again by recognising the independence of 2 Ukrainian separatist regions and now he's broken it a third time by invading the country. That bastard was always looking for an excuse to do what he is now doing. The yanks gave him that excuse by teasing NATO membership for Ukraine and they encouraged him to believe he could get away with it by cravenly turning their backs on Afghanistan and leaving it at the mercy of the Taliban.

There's zero chance of any nuclear holocaust. That's nonsense. There has been not a single nuclear missile fired in anger since Hiroshima 77 years ago, because the whole world is scared to death of what happened there might happen to them, and a hundred times worse. The Russians were expected to back down, and even if missiles had been installed in Cuba , what could they have done with them (except to keep them polished) without being obliterated by a return strike. They KNEW he had the latter because he used them. Iraq's chemical weapons were destroyed and its nuclear and biological weapons programs scrapped after the first gulf war. The Brits and Yanks knew exactly what Saddam had at that point, because it was us who sold them to him to use against the Iranians! Saddam had no WMDs and no nuclear weapons program from the mid 1990's onward. Iraq was extensively searched by the UN and the International Atomic Energy Agency both before and after the US led invasion and none were found.
