I'd like to mention here that the very dirtiest fight I've ever seen (and I've seen Fritzie Zivic, and the Baer-Carnera fight also) was the one between Freddie Norwood and Derrick "Smoke" Gainer. Even Lomachenko-Salido wasn't like this, which was ONE OF A KIND.
I've never seen a ref holding a guy helpless whilst his opponent bashes him in the basement, then let him drop, and start counting, reaching 25 before waving it off. I wonder if that ref ever worked another fight??
I suggest watching, say the last 4 rounds, particularly the LAST one, and send in your opinions..
P.S. I've just had another look at it, and think that the whole fight should
be looked at. It started out as very good, but by rd 5..........Oh boy.

I was going to mention that one. It was not a foul fest but that ref helped Coggi when he got KOed, 2 minute rounds, lifting Coogi up, etc. I heard that the ref got banned for life.
Holy vs Tillery 1 was a lovely foulfest :lol1:
There was this one fight where an Argentinian favorite was getting his ass blasted.
The hometown ref stopped the action for no reason, held the home guy up at times and allowed the home town guy to do what he wanted.
It was an 80's fight, I think either MW or WW...
There was a massive stink about it and the ref was fired :lol1:
They ordered an immediate rematch at a neutral site and hometown guy won it fair and square.
I wish I knew the names :(

Golota Bowe 1 and Holy Tyson 2
But DQs occurred in those fights because of the fouls. In the Norwood vs Gainer fight, the ref acted like everything goes. :lol1:
I like many of the older fights. They had character that today's lot don't have and never will. They were fighting for their families and to put food on the table. Not Prima Donnas like these days. The things they got away with.... Oh Boy.
Have you ever seen that very under-rated movie "The Set Up". THAT typifies boxing to me. A big advantage it had was that Robert Ryan was actually a good boxer, and in the 4 years he was in College, won the heavyweight title each year. It used to be the #1 boxing film, now forgotten. Very realistic sleaze from top to bottom.
I agree, many of the classic fights were more entertaining because people were fighting to live and feed their families, not holding out for retirement checks.
No I have not seen that movie. I see that it is a 1949 adaptation of a 1928 narrative poem. Talk about old! I like some of the old movies though, so maybe I'll check it out, if I can find it. Thanks for the tip.
Yes, pretty good, I mean bad, but they didn't last long enough like the Freddie Norwood fight..11 whole rounds -the ref being the "star". Golota was a real odd-ball. Lots of talent, very good fighter but a bit off his head I think. He fouled himself out of some very good probable wins and "Fight-of -The -Year" spots..

Emmanuel Burton vs Emanuel Augustus in Michigan was pretty bad
That was the one against Courtney Burton. He was badly robbed as he often was. I recall that fight very well, particularly Teddy Atlas having a fit with the "referee", who must have been working his first fight. But Emmanuel made up for it in the return, when he clobbered him. I loved watching him fight, so badly managed, he could have been a champion with good handlers. VERY talented. If he had a punch he'd likely could have beaten Mayweather that time. He was feather-fisted, which is why I think Mayweather, a champion, chose him, a guy with 15-16 losses.
Do you own a time machine? That's an old fight, man! I lol when Gainer was interviewing with Larry Merchant and called his nut shots to Norwood body shots. What an ugly fight! :lol1:
