A lot of people didn't think Mark was going to win a round against Gary. He was a 4-1 underdog and that's considering Gary's 2 year hiatus. Yet Gary was getting totally outclassed for 3 rounds prior to him aggrevating his shoulder injury.
People are giving bonus points to Gary for coming in injured and giving Magsayo sh** for it by playing it safe and still clearly winning against a guy who was far and beyond the fighter he has ever faced in his very young career.
Magsayo won the belt fair and square. Get over it.
Maybe coz Philippines only got 5 champs ...
-Magsayo
-Donaire (?)
-Casimero
-Ancajas
-Cuarto
Don't know why Donaire got so much hate from the Philippines when Pac was at his peak. He is an excellent fighter that has taken the challenges and best at the weight. He has loses because he has dared to be great and is still at it. One of my favorite fighters for a long time.
Magsayo barely did enough to win. Russell went in hurt, got hurt in the fight and got beat clearly, no fault of Magsayo to have that chance to get the belt. He looked very good for the first two rounds and fell into a pattern. Don't see him doing any better unless it is a lesser opponent which his Mando is not.
must be a quiet year for sports over there
made a few boxing fans happy more likely i would say
it is kinda funny when u have gary telling the world he feels he just needs an opponent to show people he is the best out there, as in top p4p best
then throws in a sneaky, ive got an injury but im a giant and dont pull out, i will fight 3 times next year & then claims he won the fight 10 - 2
just a bad week for him
Too much going on in that country for Filipinos to even care about boxing. Been there years ago. White sand beaches, inexpensive food, super huge clean malls packed with shoppers, kids and adults playing in arcades, etc. Big malls you won't even see and have in advanced countries.
Gary's performance didn't make me proud, if that's what you mean. Although he made himself tough to beat despite being one-handed.
Most people didn't think Magsayo would out-box the brilliant GRJ, but he did for those beginning rounds. Watch it again and it's clear that he did. If anything, that's something to recognize, and to be proud of.
That being said, I agree with others that Magsayo lacked the killer instinct to dispatch his opponent, not to mention Gary's IQ in preventing this. The other bouts I've seen showed a similar tendency. He'll have to ingrain this if he want to remain champ.

Donaire will probably lose to Inoue again and should retire.
Magsayo is limited and will probably lose his belt soon.
Philippines is extreme third world, like India and Africa levels of poverty. I say, let them have this champion. Not much else going for them.
That's what happens when the country is occupied for 333 years by Spain, 48 years by US and 3 years by Japan...They got bled dry while the conquerors got richer.
Do you think Gary looked more impressive than Magasayo during the rounds before the injury?

The Philippines must really be hard up for champions if they're proud because of that performance.
That's what I'm trying to say.

For one, I don't live in the PI. But I kind of agree. At least Marks win over a ring rusted and injured GRJ, he is still dangerous was a better watch than Casimero s over Rigo, that ish was painful to watch.
Lol, I know. He is still very raw. I hope he ups his game or it will be short lived.

If he had won impressively that would be one thing. But he looked terrible against an obviously injured opponent.

I'm sure someone's proud somewhere.
Mark who just a few months ago earned that mandatory shot against GRJ. What is he not doing correctly? And in hindsight, it was the perfect time to go after Gary.
I think the real question is Are you and Gary done crying?
