Could Geffrard potentially make history tonight?
Armstrong began 1-3 but won his second fight and many famous fighters like B-Hop, Juan Manuel and Rafael Marquez etc all lost their first fight’s and went on to win world titles but has anyone ever lost their first two fights and won a world title?
srisaket sor rungvisai lost his first two fights and then had a draw (0-2-1). he was 1-3-1 after 5 fights.
Great shout, pretty sure one of those early losses were to future Flyweight champ Yaegashi too.
Mike Weaver lost his first 2, 3 of his first 4, 2 by KO.
Yep.
Weaver was, at various points:
0-2
1-3
4-4
5-5
6-6
14-8
He was 19-8 before he fought any legitimate world titlists, getting stopped in the 12th round by Larry Holmes in 1979 in his first title challenge.
But then he went onto beat John Tate for the WBA heavyweight title when he was 22-9, then defended it by KO against future heavyweight champion Gerrie Coatzee and contender James Tillis. Went onto lose to other notable heavyweight champions like Michael Dokes, Bonecrusher Smith (twice), Lennox Lewis, Larry Holmes (again) and Pinklon Thomas. He did get a draw against Dokes in there, though. Retired 41-18-1 with 28 KOs and 12 KO losses.
Not 0-2, but Bernard Hopkins was 0-1 and took like 2 years off after his first pro fight/loss. Came back at 25 years old for his second pro fight, and the rest is history. Hopkins went on to have a HOF career
Goes to show that a loss should be used as a lesson
Johnny Nelson 0-3. Nash out.
Great knowledge man.
The WBO title wasn’t exactly legitimate when Nelson won it but he still has claim to being a World Champion.
