*attention* nsb pick em 2021 / 2022 winners, announcements and more

First off a happy New Year from myself (Koba) and I hopefully the rest of the CREW to all our fellow boxing fans and afficinados on Non Stop Boxing.... as ever for all the arguments and debates we all have a shared love of the sport, which is of course what keeps is all coming back despite all the nonsense... as ever it's been a pleasure sharing another year in boxing with you. Cheers! :beerchug: OK so down to business, after an epic year of the pick em we once again went down to the wire, by early December we still had 6 players in with a very real shot keithj - this years' stellar debutante who led early in season and never really dropped out of the top 3 or 4 places, veteran ruedboy having his best year to date and slow burner YoungManRumble who despite a relatively slow start to the year powered through to a very strong finish and looked poised to take the title coming into the final fights of the year. Also worthy of mention mlac who was also right up in the top places until the very end of the year and strong finisher ShoulderRoll who nearly found a way through with his sprint finish. So... the results for a split of the $500 annual prize fund provided courtesy of Boxing Scene with thanks to BIGPOPPAPUMP were as follows: 1st PLACE - $300 and 2021 NSB PICK EM CHAMPION: keithj 2nd PLACE - $150: YoungManRumble 3rd Place - $50: ruedboy In addition we have numerous other category winners which used to come with POINTS awards, but have obviously been rendered a little reduntant by the change on the Scene's points sytem with the update this year. Hopefully at some point in the future we'll be able to return to offering some reward to those who scored particualrly well in certain areas, but for now a simple acknowledgement will have to suffice: HIGHEST % WINNING PREDICTIONS: ruedboy - 75% (honourable mention Satir and mlac (satir actually had ahigher % but picked in too few fights) MOST PERFECT PICKS: YoungManRumble 32 (not far off 30% and smashing the prvious record) LONGEST WINNING STREAK: YoungManRumble 20 (honourable mention Baltimore on 19 who was just pipped in the final fight of the year) Secondly whilst we obviously got a hardcore of PICK EM players who come back year after year (and 2022 will be our 5th year of running an NSB Pick Em league) we're always on the lookout for new players so with that in mind I'd like to extewnd an invitation to all Boxing Scene mebers, and especially our regular forum posters to join in with the 2022 Pick Em competiton which begins tonight with Ortiz vs Miller. The game is very strightforward, and easy to play, every week or coupla weeks we'll be putting up a thread with anywhere from 1 to 3 fights on it and all you got to do is predict the winner and method of victory for each fight in the format WINNER, METHOD, DETAIL eg: MARTIN KO MID (5 - 8). And I'd suggest that if you got any interest in jpo0ining in this years' Pick Em competiton either for a shot at winning the prizes or simply to test your knowledge and for the banter and bragging rights that you at least put post a pick for this first fight of the year. You can always drop out later but honestly if you want to be in with the best chance of a top placing next year consistency is one of the keys, miss more than a few of the early picks and it'll be along hard road back into contention... For a few of our former players who have been put off by the hectic schedule we're gonna make a serious effort to pace things alittle more moderately this year and also try to keep a running advance schedule... and yes, I know I say this every year but gonna make extra efforts in 2022. I'm also gonna try alittle harder to keep on top of the leaderboard in 20222 although experience has taught me that's a tough ask, especially through the summer months. If there's anyone got a passing knowledge of spreadsheets and reckons they could spare acoupla hours now and then the help would be hugely appreciated! Okay. Liam Smith vs Jessie Vargas is also off, the latter caught Covid. Will there be a Pick Em League this year? :( Fkn pain in the ass tbh but we dealt with this level of cancellations in 2020. My guess is that COVID cases are gonna surge for the next month or two but barring the emergence of another more lethal strain all the signs from the changing tone in the media is that most countries are about looking for the off ramp now... reckon by March or April we'll be mostly back to normal... in fact likely we'll have a catch-up glut then when postponed fights are rescheduled. Just guessing of course but those are the kinda signs Im seeing. For now we'll just grab any Boxrec 4* fights that crop up, but I might have to see about including the odd interesting lower level one just to keep some momentum going. Much as I'm enjoying the break I don't want this thing to lose steam altogether.

Oh ffs... decided to have a week away from the forum so I hadn't been keeping up. Oh well no real surprise I guess. Imagine we'll get a few fights cancelled this next month or two whilst this Omicron thingy works it's way through... hopefully peak and drop fairly fast though. Damn shame, was really looking forward to these two squaring off too, stylses mesh virtually guarantees a barnburner... like someone said it's like the American version Callum Johnson vs the British version of Joe Smith... :lol1: But no then. It was actually gonna be a superb weekend of boxing with Yoka vs Bakole and Johnson vs Smith but with em both cancelled I'm not gonna go searching around for some low level tear up to do just for the sake of it. Guess we're gonna be waiting for Gary Russell to crawl out of the cryo-chamber for his 2022 outing against Magsayo on the 22nd.:lol1: Potentially there's Tug vs Pasillas and perhaps more notably Makhumudov vs Wach (even though Mariusz is little more than a speed bump these days) but I'm making an effort to stick with title fights or high profile match-ups this year so probably not. And Pedraza vs Ramirez ain't gonna happen as well, on February 5. What a start, 2022.

Smith - Johnson fight got cancelled due to Johnson catching COVID. Now it is Smith against replacement Steve Geffrard which I don't know if it is worthy of pick-em (?) From the little I saw of him, Geffrard has a quick left hook, but gets hit often even by low-level opponents and is not imposing on a physical level. I see Smith knocking him out within four or so.

Absoluitely you should. More the merrier. We had prizes since about 2019 I think... :thinking: yeah, that'd be about right. I took over from BroBob in early 2018 and kinda muddled through the first year, then around Xmas 19 once I'd got into the swing of things I kinda drunkenly PMed BPP and asked about the possibility of the Scene providing a prize - not really expecting anything to come of it - and he came through. Since we only had one fight this year so far there's not really any significant ground to catch up yet so hopefully we'll get a few more joining in too. I'm aiming to get a new masterthread together and the Pick Em thread for the Smith vs Johnson fight up for either tomorrow evening or Tuesday and then it's just a matter of posting your pick(s) in the threads as they come up every week or two. Lost for words... :lol1: But nah, absolutely a pleaure. It can be a bit of a pain in the ass keeping up with the updating but the end of the day if I didn't enjoy doing it I wouldn't. And once more huge congratualtions... you were right in there from the start of the year to the finish and that was some epic come from behind photo finish you pulled out at the end there. Oh yeah, and if BIGPOPPAPUMP ain't reached out to you yet then I'd suggest you PM him for your winnings, think you'll need a paypal account if you ain't already got one too... umm. Never thought to ask where you're based either? If you're in the US there shouldn't be any issues but if you're elsewhere there might be some minor international fees and currency conversion might take a small bite out of your winnings but I guess that can't be helped. Anyways, well done man.:beerchug:
