This is going to diminish Roy Jones jr’s heavyweight belt.
I remember the days when people used to speak with mystique over Roy grabbing a heavyweight belt as a career middleweight. It was a massive accomplishment. To this day I applaud it, and still respect what he did.
Now? Things have changed. Haters are out in force to let everyone know, it is not ok anymore to grab a belt in a higher weight class, unless it’s against the top dog.
This new understanding means Roy’s accomplishment is collateral damage. As everyone knows he grabbed a heavyweight belt by beating John the Quiet Man Ruiz when there were real killers at that weight, which of course he didn’t want none of. No one questioned him as he went back down to 175lbs, and understood why he left, and didn’t hold it against him.
Canelo isn’t afforded this luxury. Canelo jumping up to Cruiserweight against the WBC champion, as a 5’7” middleweight is nothing special now because it’s not against the top ranked champion. Now, there are rumblings that he’ll reach for a heavyweight title, if the 4 belts change hands in the future.
Naturally, haters are laying the ground work, ready to say of course he’s going up against a weak champion, thus reminding us all that Roy did this once, and Roy was applauded over such a tactic once upon a time.
Not anymore.
Who else could Roy have fought though? Lennox? Wlad? Those guys are way too big, it’s like asking Canelo to jump up and fight Fury or Wilder. It’s crazy. The only other guy he could have reasonably fought was Chris Byrd but it’s not like he was all that much better than Ruiz.
The term “cherry pick” is so overused by modern fans and half of them don’t really have a good understanding of the concept. Moving up 25 plus pounds and fighting a guy 30 plus pounds heavier is far from a cherry pick. Just like Canelo moving up 22 pounds and fighting a much naturally bigger guy in Makabu isn’t a cherry pick. There are significant risks involved in both those matchups.
Youre preaching to the choir.
I agree with everything you said. That’s why I put quotes, because dumb fans think it’s a cherry pick. Roy is one of my top top fighters, but so is Canelo. I want them both to get recognized for what they did.
I was posting about how Roys achievement will be questioned more by fans now, not me.
Maybe it’s just me, but I find it exciting when I see a skilled smaller guy go up against a bigger less skilled fighter. The bug guy has the power and can end things at any second.
It's because anyone who's watched the cruiserweight division knows how terrible Makambu is he holds a belt but really isn't at top 10 cruserweght. Floyd said that all the welterweights in his gym were beating the **** out of him.
It doesn't matter though because the fight isn't happening. Canelo is fighting Joe Smith which is a much bigger challenge then Makalbu.
You keep using that quote from Floyd which to anyone paying attention at all has zero credibility. Floyd gets apoplectic every time Canelo’s name is in the news.
Floyd gets less and less attention every day and he’s not leaving the stage at all gracefully.
Both weren’t the top dogs of the division, but no one questioned Roy about “cherry picking” Ruiz, that’s my point. Who is better between the two is irrelevant.

John Ruiz > Illunga Makabu and it’s not even close tbh.
Toney’s run at HW was the best out of any former middleweight’s in the modern era too.
I don’t see Canelo going to HW, nor should he have to either, his legacy is already secure.

Not in the top 10 is too harsh imo. Makabu beats Tabiti and Glowacki. I haven't seen Masternak in a while but he also lost to Bellew who you say is a fraud. The division isn't that deep.
Gassiev, Hunter, Huck all moved up ages ago.
I think he gets humiliated by Tabiti and Glowacki but we can agree to disagree.
On Masternak, the Bellew fight was close. However Makabu got murdered by Bellew.
There's at least 15 cruiserweghts I can name who I think ether defintley would or would have a good shot of beating Makabu, and plenty of guys at 175 and below. Again Bellew was garbage at 175 and he moved up and made it look easy against Makabu. Just imagine what Bivol or Beterbiev would do to him.
Also you need to not take it so personal, I already said I give Canelo a lot of credit for taking the Joe Smith fight, that takes a lot of balls for someone 5'7 who started at 140 to take a fight like that.
Nobody who actually watches the cruserweight division honestly believes that he's on the level of those guys I just named unless they're running witness protection for Canelo
Listen, take back Makabu not being a top 10 cruiserweight. He’s the WBC champion and has been for a long time. Fight or no Canelo fight, at least keep it real.
MF’r you can’t even name 10 cruiserweights lol
He is ranked in the top 10 by the ring but I've seen him fight many times along with many other cruiserweight. He dint even enter any of the 2 super 6s because he knows he gets his ass beat by all those guys, Breides, Dorticos, Tabiti, Masternak, Huck, Glowacki, Gassiev, Hunter, I don't even know if he beats Mchunu again the second time.
Cieslak was the only respectable opponent Makabu ever fought at cruiser and even he just fought bums.
Also Tony Bellew was a light heavyweight, a total fraud at cruiserweight, but he still beat the shit out of Makabu.
Skill wise and resume use Makabu is not better than any those guys I named.
