hagler was an undisputed middleweight and knocked out everybody during his reign except duran. meanwhile leonard never fought at middleweight, hadnt fought in 3 years, and had a broken retina. aka damaged goods. hagler thought it would be an easy win and to have another ATG scalp on his resume.
what happens instead is that he got schooled, lost at least 8 rounds, and the fight ended up from upset of the year, to upset of the decade!! imagine being an undisputed middleweight champ and getting schooled by a fat, inactive welterweight with a broken eye lol.
also we need to discuss about hagler's cherry picking. Dude's biggest wins were Duran, a lightweight, Hearns, a welterweight. And Mugabi, who fought nobody before Hagler. lmao.
you just gave the reason spinks wanted to fight hagler....there was no money in LH so spinks went to HW a MUCH bigger move then hagler going to LH. all the great fighters moved up and won more titles hagler NEVER did
Well Hagler may have gone up after the biggest payday he could get which was Srl, but after he felt he was robbed, and Srl welched on the rematch is when he decided to retire. Its all water under the bridge now and its nothing wrong with being a career middleweight.
Nobody was clamoring for Spinks/Hagler
To be fair, his comments ring pretty in-line with how current day boxing fans talk about current boxers cherry picking and what not.
They are not fans, they are fanboys

It was his biggest payday. It was cherrypicking, it was jackpot picking.

the fact that no one brought that up is :lol1::lol1:
Somebody school this lame.

I don't know man. Hagler was undisputed at middleweight and he defended those titles with pride while he set his goals on breaking Monzon's title defense record. From a business standpoint Hearns, Duran, and Srl brought more money and prestige than Mike Spinks at lightheavyweight I wouldn't consider a glamour division.

hagler and mugabi killed each other and were never the sam .Ray was right to fight hagler. never liked hagler cause his biggest fights were against lightweights welters and junior middleweights. NEVER moved up and spinks was begging him to move to LH

SRL never wanted to fight Hagler until he saw him slipping in the Mugabi fight. He knew he wasn’t the same and whilst watching the fight, he phoned his team and said told them to make an offer. If anyone was “picking”, it was the other way around.
And don’t get it twisted, SRL is the definition of an all-time-great. He went north of middleweight and won world titles.

You’re either trolling or just don’t know the era coming out with sh** like this. :lol1:
Duran was light middleweight champion and had just beat Davey Moore.
Hearn was also light middleweight champ and has had several fights at middleweight.
Mugabi was ranked #1 or #2 at middleweight and had beaten top 10 guys on the way up. Parker was definitely one of them, I’m sure there are others too.

Ray was the guy who decided on making that fight in 87, Hagler had been chasing him for years.

No, because by 1986 one could easily tell that Marvin's heart was just not into the sport anymore. He had gotten beaten up by John Mugabi and contemplated retirement as he was anticipating one last fight against Thomas Hearns.
Then out of the clear blue Ray Leonard announced his comeback which caught everybody by surprise; Including Hagler himself. So I say it was a cherrypick gone right for Sugar Ray Leonard.

your first sentence explains it all. Hagler was undipsuted. That means he beat everybody at 160.
If the cash cow wanna move up and challenge you. You take it.
