Remember this fight? Everyone said Holyfield was too small. Everyone said that he couldn't hurt Douglas, that his punches would be nothing. Everyone said that Douglas was gong to pulverize Evander. Remember? ALL THE EXPERTS (or many of them).
Remember what happened? Do you see the similarities? This fight tomorrow could very well look like this fight.
There is a thread saying Usyk is so basic, so overrated, that Joshua should retire if he loses. It would be that shameful. This despite Usyk cleaning out the CW division and unifying, and defending those unified titles during a time with a very deep CW group. No one in the US or England really noticed because they were mostly European, but it was a DEEP roster, and Usyk fought them all and beat more than a few of them on their own soil.
Now this one basically has AJ in the same historic level as the all time boxing One-Night-Wonder, despite holding four titles for the better part of 2 years and avenging his only loss.
This is why I love Boxing Scene. "If you are always somewhere in-between, you never taste the sweet extremes." Sammy Hagar, "Both Sides Now".
Some of you are just utterly disrespectful on this forum.
What does AJ have in common with Douglas? AJ beats Holyfield in his prime 9 out of 10 times. FOH.
Fuck no he doesn't.
Also very valid. A lot of people acting like Joshua has gone in the opposite direction and slimmed down too much and might RJJ himself but he weighed the same as vs Pulev and only 7 lbs less than when he was stopped by Ruiz.
I think Joshua understands he will need a lot of energy for Usyk. But Usyk has far better boxing skills, Joshua has always depended on his power. It comes down to whether Usyk can avoid the big punch or not. I think he has a good chance of doing so, but being that this is in the UK and that Joshua is the champion, it will be hard for Usyk to get a decision, especially because of the potential huge money showdown between the Fury vs Wilder winner. Boxing is what it is. Usyk needs to have an undeniable win, one way or another.
Not really a good comparison. Douglas had gained 15 lbs and was in terrible shape.

If I were Usyk, I would boxboxbox and see what AJ has in his tank. Circling at all times.
If I were AJ, I'd enforce my size advantage and break Usyk down INTELLIGENTLY, one combo at a time.
Don't know how but I think AJ has this fair n square.
Interesting. I had no idea. I did know that Holyfield was ecstatic that Douglas was coming in so heavy. Sugar Ray was picking Douglas to win; I know that. I think the odds are still -200 for Joshua and +250 for Usyk?
Looking at my square offshore book it's the opposite -250 Joshua +200 Usyk money line currently. Most books pretty close to that though it seems.
https://www.proboxingodds.com/fighters/Anthony-Joshua-193 this link shows that in May when this fight was floated or talked about, tentative odds had Joshua openings around -400 but it looks like they evened out and stabilized pretty quickly also.

Holyfield already had 6 wins at heavyweight before the Douglas fight, including stoppage wins over former heavyweight champions Pinklon Thomas and Michael Dokes. Usyk beat freaking Witherspoon and then struggled badly against Chisora. Let's not anoint him the next Holyfield quite yet.

I had a feeling that was the case. I never thought much of Mike or Buster. The Mike that fought before King got involved would have made easy work of Buster.
I don't think so. You had Bert Sugar, Sugar Ray Leonard and others saying that Douglas was just too much for Evander. That there was no way. I don't know what the odds were in Vegas, though. :dunno:
I could be wrong. I just can't remember. I personally thought they did Buster wrong by matching him with Holy. Completely wrong opponent.
Couple interesting tidbits from boxrec:
Douglas put on a lot of weight after defeating Tyson and entered training camp very heavy. Wynn was so concerned about Douglas' weight that he offered the champion private use of a hotel sauna. Wynn wasn't very happy when he discovered that Douglas called room service from the sauna on one occasion and ordered $98 worth of food.
At the official weigh-in, Douglas weighed 246 lbs, 14½ more than his weight for the Tyson fight. "Roll him in and carry him out," said Lou Duva, co-trainer of Holyfield, who came in at a svelte 208. Mirage oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro said there was a mad rush to the sports book after the weigh-in. "Over $150,000 was bet in one hour, and 90 percent of it was bet on Holyfield," he said. Holyfield had been as much as a 12-5 favorite. The odds went down to 7-5, but after the weigh-in, went up to 9-5.
Ahhh you beat me to it :lol1:

Well for the sake of some of our pocketbooks let's hope Usyk at least waits until the second half of the fight to lay it on and stop the big man.
LOL! Definitely :lol1:

Wasn't Holy the favorite ?
