I was just thinking about this. I've been to a decent amount over the years...mostly smaller level cards that you'd see on ESPN back in the day or that weren't televised at all.
For me the one I always go back to was Frans Botha and Shannon Briggs in 1999. It was a pretty good fight with a great atmosphere. Marco Antonio Barrera was on the undercard in an uneventful fight.
The runners up to that would probably be Beterbiev/Gvozdyk (incredibly violent) and Gatti/Ward II (the least exciting of an epic trilogy).
Hopefully, my first one is a good one! Maybe I can make it to Vegas one day when the kids are a little older. For now, I hope to catch some amateur fights if possible, but the whole vaccine passport situation here has me doubting that will be possible either.
Man, this is one of those lesser known fights that is one of my all-time favorites. I remember watching this one on television and it was incredible. You had the South American rivalry going. La Hiena looked menacing (I think he was wearing goggles) as he came in the ring. The fight was fought with bad intentions and there was a tense buzz during the fight. You could feel either one could stretch the other with one shot. Freitas came back and stopped him. Your description of Barrios is spot on, looked like he got tased or something.
Your #2 fight with Torres and Holt is crazy too. I remember seeing grainy footage of the chaos during that fight.
Thanks for commenting.
haha yeah Barrios came in with googles. I was happy for him when I saw him years later win a 135lb belt when he destroyed Mike Anchondo in Miami. Barrios was a tough son of a bitch, unfortunately his life didn’t pan out well after retiring.
Yeah it was a great night. I had a blast. Did I see you say you were at Floyd vs Hatton? Im jealous of that one.
Did the MGM really run out of beer?
I think the arena did yeah. :lol1: I remember it wasn’t even worth trying to get a beer inside the MGM arena on fight night cause the queues were just ridiculous. The bars inside the hotel didn’t run out though, I think people have probably exaggerated that bit.
Been to a lot of live fights but 2 of the most memorable ones were the following….
#1 Saw Acelino Freitas vs Jorge Barrios at the old miami arena and me and my bro snuck down to ringside and sat right next to Floyd Mayweather Sr. and Panchito Bojado. Mayweather was super humble and he kept making faces when all the fine ass Brazilians and Argentinian women were passing by. Barrios was a huge Argentinian underdog never fought in the US against the Brazilian reigning 130lb champ frietas in Miami. The fight was amazing, Barrios dropped Frietas, Barrios was gushing blood and use the referee shirt to help him clear his vision haha and he was winning the fight but in round 11 Frietas landed a huge right hand that froze Barrios and he looked like he got shocked by one of those hand buzzer things people use for pranks and got dropped but got up. Barrios got stopped in the 12th.

#2 went to see Kendall Holt vs Ricardo Torres first fight in Barranquilla,Colombia which was Torres hometown. My wife is from there and I bought tickets for my wife and my father in law. She’s never been to a live fight and for some odd reason she wore a white dress. We sat 2 rows from the ring, holt comes out and drops Torres and is winning the fight easily but out of nowhere Torres landed a huge hook on holt that put him on Queer Street, that’s when all hell broke loose. Bottles of whiskey and Beer cans were being thrown In the ring due to the excitement of Torres hurting Holt. Me and my father in law got hit with a couple of cans protecting my wife. Wild ass ending holt’s leg was being held by Torres cornermen so Torres can tag him. Holts getting hit by bottles and the ref waves it off. Torres wins and everybody got in the ring, i swear everybody was on that Colombian gold that night. Wife had holts and Torres blood on her dress. It was amazing, every time I visit her dad he tells the story of the fight
LSC vs Mares I had a nice atmosphere.
My first card I attended was Floyd vs Sosa and Cotto was on the undercard. Will always remember that card and how all the advertising done before the fight was about the Alcorn vs St. John fight lol.
Floyd vs Maidana I was also great.
Ward vs Kessler was dope (Almost all Ward fight cards were awesome just with how the crowd is)
Ramirez vs Reed (Beterbiev looked so average, the crowd was booing throughout the fight lol)
Like you, a lot of the best fight cards are local cards without big names. But these were some of the cards I enjoyed or remember vividly.
Any fight between two Hispanic fighters from socal either at Staples or StubHub will always draw a crowd and be memorable. I was there for Ortiz vs Josesito and it was crackin, one of the best fights I've been to. Another was Lucas vs John molina...made friends with a group of Argentinians who were handing out thier native flags to anyone who wanted one and just joined in shouting "Concha de su madre" or something like that.. Was there with my brother, our wifes and a couple family friends who were just casuals and to this day, they still bring it up as one of the best sporting events they have ever been to.
Wish I’d have been at that fight! Was real feel good moment for boxing fans that night, the Alamodome looked like it was rocking too. Must have been a great experience.

Now that Oxon Hill is in the DMV area we have seen quite a few good fights there. It’s actually very convenient to get to, so is Florida too. NY isn’t too far ether. When Atlantic City used to be wide open that was wonderful, went to crap fast though.
Back to thread topic, some of you posters have really been to some real special ones! Hope C-19 allows us to keep attending stadiums and arenas.
:boxing:
I was lucky enough to see Gatti vs Ward 1. I’ve always felt like I was in the right place, just with the wrong people! Miss those people doe. Marriage makes this ish tough, plus the kids. Ha.
The Gary Russell-Johnny Gonzalez card in Vegas. Charlo bros entertained and the main event was short and sweet. Im pretty sure thats the fight that sent Santa Cruz into hiding.
Haha, Nice. There was a few guys from across the pond sitting behind us. Some of the Mexican guys got a little to familiar with them. They were about to take on the whole lot.
I can imagine mate. :lol1: Us scousers can come across a bit aggressive sometimes, all bark no bite most of them though. I had a great time in Texas though, I’ve always found the Mexican fans very friendly as well tbh.
…and about 1000 screaming scousers (me included) watching Smith get outclassed. :lol1:
Amazing stadium, this was the first time I ever saw Canelo live too. He’s far better in the flesh IMO, many nuances to his game you fail to appreciate watching him from afar.

Been lucky to have been to quite a few, my dad got me started pretty early taking to local fights in LA....then Vegas for closed circuit of major fights, Friday ballroom shows and eventually to notable fights in Vegas.
Just fell in love with everything about it - the atmosphere, the boxing teams walking around the casino, weigh-ins, the old timers and colorful boxing characters this game attracts. A lot of those types aren't around anymore so it isn't quite the same as Tyson, Oscar days but the Floyd and Pac run were good too. I took many different groups of friends to those weeknds and they loved it too. Always electric when there is a big fight to cap it all off
First live fight was at like 11yr old was Chiquita Gonzalez v Carbajal - if u know that fight, then it sense why I'm addicted to boxing after that one. I highly recommend watching that fight for any newer fan
The best two back-to-back fights on a card was Hussein v Arce and Pac v Morales 1. Two FOTY candidates
Chavez vTaylor 2 was a good card I remember, Don King type...had young Tito v Yory Boy Campas. Leija v Ruelas
Floyd-Judah was at the Thomas and Mack and there was no casino so it had celebrities walking around the arena all over the place, pretty fun to see. The guy posted above about this card is 100% accurate. Then there was the ring riot which was nuts - to me the first crowd was pro-Zab but then it flipped to Floyd right after the riot - never seen such a turn in a crowd.
I cant remember all the fights on these cards but other notables:
Barrera-Morales 1
Pac-Maquez II
Marg-Cotto I - this might have been peak excitement for me
been lucky. great memories and more to come!
Canelo vs Liam Smith Id say just because of the venue. 50,000 plus screaming Mexicans in the home of the Cowboys was something to behold. The fights were meh but the environment was fun.

Broner Vs Maidana.

Mayweather-Hatton or Hatton-Tszyu. For fight night atmosphere Hatton-Tszyu but for fight week atmosphere Mayweather-Hatton, Brits literally took over Vegas that weekend. I’ve been to Vegas multiple times and I’ve never seen anything like that, unbelievable scenes.
I’ve only been to a few fights but definitely the biggest was Canelo/Trout in San Antonio.
The Riverwalk was full of fight fans when we got there Thursday night and a packed Alamodome was a great atmosphere.
Awesome story man. That's a great experience with Rodger Leonard ringside. I had the opportunity to meet Marvis Frazier one time and he was incredibly humble and funny. He was surprised I recognized him and when I told him I'd seen him fight on TV, he asked me if i saw him standing up or laying down.
What a classy guy. What a great quote. I’ll share that story with the fam. Nice work.
