I looked it up and Duran actually started his pro career as a Featherweight. He beat Ernesto Marcel who went on to become the Featherweight champion. Interestingly Marcel beat Alexis Arguello so Marcel was a damned good fighter.. He also beat Hiroshi Kobayashi who was a former Super Featherweight champion.

I think there were a handful better fighters at 160 than Barkley at the time, whilst Errol has case for being the best WW. Pac is beating arguably the best WW, arguably one of the best in any weight. I think your talking duran beating barkley was a bigger upset as your saying duran wasn't looking good during that time, rather than a greater win, or more special. Just a bigger upset which is different to b eing a special win like pac beating spence in that former flyweights, with 70 fights under belt at tail end of careers don't best prime, undefeated pfp fighters. My first introduction to boxing was with Duran vs Barkley. I think i was 5-6 years old at that time when my pops took me out to a bar and had some dog meat back in the Philippines. Me being 37 years old now makes me think that if Pacquiao wins against Spence then it would definitely fall under the same category. What was and would be a great experience! War Pacquiao!!

Go watch the fight. Was Spence really better than Barkley or did he fight inferior competition? Kell was a very good fighter but let's face it he was damaged goods at the time of the Spence fight. Mikey didn't have a chance against Spence and Danny didn't throw enough punches. Part of Danny's problem was Spence's great jab and bodywork which I've always admired but watvmching some of Danny's oervious fight Ive always though his economical punch output would catch up to him against a good fighter. Barkley beat Virgil Hill, Micheal Olajidy and IMO beat Ray Leonard in the rematch in his previous fights prior to the loss to Barkley. He was still a great boxer whan he lost to Barkley. Despite his losses Barkley was a lot better than people gave him credit for. He made plenty of adjustments in the Duran fight. Don't get me wrong I really enjoy watching Spence and Pac.
