I agree. Becoming undisputed at 168 will probably do more for the legacy. It seems like the public opinion has shifted on the Golovkin fights to "Canelo won that second fight and therefore would win the third". To be fair I kind of agree with the sentiment; not saying Golovikn can't win, but Canelo has looked VERY good his last few fights. So it's a little bit of a lose-lose for Canelo: if he loses to Golovkin everyone will say "Well Golovkin really beat him 3 times and was robbed twice" and if he beats Golovkin everyone will say "Of course you beat a 39 year old declining fighter who you already beat 3 years ago!". At least regarding Plant, while most would pick Canelo to win, Plant is a legit fight and undefeated Champ.
The public perception changed because everyone saw it was impossible for him to get a win on points in Vegas. Even he, himself demanded the fight be outside of Vegas and that alone killed negotiations.
Canelo knows he was lucky to squeak by with a win which why he didn't care for a 3rd fight immediately instead choosing to wait GGG out AGAIN.
The near 3 years he waiting GGG out the first time turned into one of the biggest robberies I've ever seen with that 118-110 card being terrible. Then he gets popped for PEDs and "somehow" can't make 160 anymore despite always being small for that weight?
Now 4 years later and GGG being near 40 Canelo knows he is vulnerable and can now get a clear win.
Does that sound like someone who's supposed to be the best in the world?
Golovkin will be a tougher fight even at 39. 32 year old Pacquiao got brutally KTFO by a 39yr old Marquez.
But a Plant fight will do more to Canelo’s legacy as a win will make him the 1st undisputed champion at 168lbs in boxing history, a feat no boxer has done yet.
