Back when Oscar was talking about coming back post Scaeffer fallout I was all over NSB Calling for this fight. I realize that Margarito would have worked him over when Tony was in his prime, but he’s shot now too and Oscar never lost to a face-first kinda boxer in his career.
Would be a solid event even now.
did Floyd really lose money fighting Baldomir?
no he didnt lose money. he didnt maximize his money either. also he could have fought marg for 7 million but chose sharmba for 3 instead. there is an old article on it. its hilarious. then he fought judah coming off a loss for less as well oh well.
Remember he got booed, and Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan were so bored they left after the tenth round. Then Floyd cried and had a nervous breakdown at the post fight press conference, saying he was retiring. All the pressure of ducking Margarito and being booed caused phloyd to have a nervous breakdown. It was very embarrassing night for fraud weather.
Goossen supposedly paid phloyd $8,000,001 for the baldomir fight, but phloyd also had to deduct I believe it was $250,000 for buying out of the Top Rank contract. So he would have earned more for boxing Margarito but he would have lost to Margarito, because haymon could not rig Margarito/Arum. baldomir was surely rigged to play soft with a career high payday.
it was 750k actually and he was never fighting marg. remember he said ill fight marg if you guarantee me 20 for hoya as well. thats your classic price out. his guarantee when he fought hoya the next year was only 10 million so as you can see he had no interest in ever fighting marg and made sure of it. also more evidence to support that theory is after marg scored a huge win over cotto floyd still could have fought him...but nope.
i dont think you need to rig a fight with baldomir though. he sucked. baldomir himself could have taken a tough fight after beating judah but he wanted to preserve that floyd chance so they matched him with shot gatti so baldomir wouldnt lose.
Oscar was supposed to fight the winner between Cotto vs Margarito, he publicly announced it. When Margarito came out on top, Oscar completely changed his mind and looked for other options.
Oscar was obviously looking forward for Cotto. Cotto was Floyd’s WW rival that time. Since Floyd rejected rematch and retired, Cotto was Oscar’s next best option till Margarito ruined it. Margarito was never the option. Lol
Yup it's all coming back to me now thx
Margarito beat the hell out of Oscar in sparring, Oscar couldn't take it and then ordered Margarito to just basically be a dummy and take his punches. Margarito left. This was back when Margarito was a beast, the beast who frightened fraud weather for over a year, when Arum was pushing very hard to match fraud weather vs Margarito. Arum's scheme was to have Margarito destroy fraud weather, which he would have, and then have Margarito as his big mexican star asset.
but fraud weather knew Margarito would have eaten him alive and kept ducking the fight until finally he bought out of his Top Rank contract and fled Arum and Margarito and went with Goossen to fight a hired patsy named Baldomir for the same amount Arum had offered him to fight Margarito. Not counting the six figures fraud weather had to pay Arum to get out of the Top Rank deal. so fraud weather lost money fighting the patsy baldomir instead of Margarito.
2004-2006 Margarito slaughered lil phloyd, but phloyd knew it and was able to duck the slaughter.
did Floyd really lose money fighting Baldomir?
Always wanted to see it!
"Oscar Fought Everybody" is a bit of a Myth though I remember Oscar career very well and it was fights I wanted to see him in that he never did, Margarito was one of them but also Cotto but he said he wouldn't do it because he Wife at the Time was Rican or something like that. Also like Floyd, wanted to see Oscar vs Winky Wright and Vernon Forrest as well
I doubt Margarito gets the opportunity at a Exhibition because of his past of course but I wouldn't mind it
I agree but I also think it's unreasonable to expect a fighter to fight everyone. Timing plays a huge part as well in addition to the other things that are usually mentioned. In the modern era, you'll be hard-pressed to find someone that fight every viable opponent. They all have misses.
Sounds cool. Maybe we can get an exhibition league. Watching legends may be more entertaining than these young lions dancing around each other for bums. Even if it’s exhibitions.
Just remembered Cotto was having an exhibition with Marquez on the 12th, but can’t find anything on it now. If anyone’s got the hook-up.
I can't remember the context at the time for some reason I was thinking they're slightly apart in their careers but you guys are reminding me it was all around the same time and that both were relevant. It's was such a logical matchup too

Oscar already ducked Margarito in 08.
heck, if they book this fight, I'll still watch it!
Oscar would do the same thing Mosley did, just because guys don't fight its only rarely a true avoidance its a lot more going on why a fight doesn't happen, Margarito was a tough plodder, the top guys will always beat him by stopping him or washing 12 rounds with a few moments where the crowd reacts, I think Margarito was way overrated not a big draw and would always bring a fight, I don't see him beating any of the real top guys, I think Oscar would stop him now if this happens.
