Did it tarnish his legacy to suffer six losses, a draw and one no-contest from age 40 to retirement at age 51? Did he stay too long? When should he have called it quits?
Nah. Hopkins enhanced his legacy hugely by staying on, unifying and becoming the oldest World champion in boxing history. As a MW alone he could probably have gone down as an ATG in that class based on longevity despite a less than stellar resume, add in his accomplishments at LHW and he ranks amongst the true legends of the sport
Not so sure of that..Do people remember Tyson for his late career embarrassments against Williams or McBride or the beast he was aged 18-22?
I think people mostly remember prime Tyson for getting outclassed and knocked out by journeyman Douglas, then being embarrassed twice by Holyfield.
Nah, because he was also unified champion at one point during that run.
Roy Jones Jr is the one who really trashed his legacy. A lot of people are going to remember him as a fragile dude that was always being KOd.
Definitely agree that Jones hurt his legacy staying around too long. Should have packed it in after beating Tarver. Or the Lacy fight at the latest.

Depends on how you judge fighters. Usually people look at their prime years to rate them, not their later years. SRR lost loads of fights late in his career but people really rate him for his prime when he was practically unbeatable. Same as RJJ.
Personally the fact he was competetive with elite boxers well into his 40's probably tells you how good he was in his prime. Plus he was a very later starter as he was in prison as a young man when he should really have been turning pro.
Not at all. I think his run from 40-49 really enhanced his legacy. He made history, all of his losses were to former/current/future world champions. I think it’s arguable he could have got the decision vs Taylor and Calzaghe too.

No, his legacy was enhanced for what he did from the age of 40-49.
If Pacquiao loses to Spence, no one is going to hold that against him 10 years from now.
