Billy Joe made a business/quality of life decision. I think he took a shot flush to the eye ball, it looked like his eye ball was pushed back into his head. He blatantly couldn't see shit out of that eye in the last round and Canelo knew it.
Canelo is pretty much an unbeatable fighter tbh.
He knew he was getting stopped, the big question got asked does he want to continue.Bingo! Canelo was getting ready to finish him. He knew it and then he quit.
If his eye was indeed closed - and he stood up the refree would have stopped the fight anyway - it is pretty automatic today that they won't let a fighter blinded in one eye to continue - would that have saved him from being called a quitter?
Yeah, if the ref or doctor makes the decision it 100% changes the way fans will look at it and remember it.

Yes, he got hit flush in the eye but it was his way of tapping out of the fight. I'd always thought BJS was a lot tougher than that. Canelo got a second wind and started to tag him and as he felt that onslaught coming on he decided to quit! I guess Alvarez punches too hard after all.
Agreed.
Saunders was folding well before he got hit in the eye. He had a choice to fight on or to quit. It might have been a wise choice to quit but that doesn’t make it any less of a “No Mas”. He knew that he was going to get destroyed so he chose the easiest and smartest way out.

I don’t think you can call that quitting because it’s a legitimate injury.
It’s like this, in sickness, no one cares about depression or mental illnesses. No one sees that as a “real” illness because you can’t see it. But your brain is physically changed, it’s affected. But who can see a brain? No one, so no one cares.
In boxing, if you break your arm, leg, or die in the ring, you’re good. You’re safe, you’re not quitter.
But someone literally breaks your bones around your eyes, cheeks, and you can no longer fight. Guess what? We can’t see that, so you’re a quitter.
And yeah, whatever, Abraham fought with his jaw hanging vs Miranda. Ali fought with a broken jaw vs Norton. Etc. etc. Okay that is what makes those fights “special”, an anomaly. The organs like eyes, brain, were not made to get hit. Someone suffering from blindness/brain injury should not be the only way to be called tough. In my opinion BJS is tough for being in the ring with Canelo for 8 rounds and despite having him lost 6 rounds, I didn’t think he looked “bad”. Canelo just looked better and landed better punches at a higher rate.
It wasn't just the uppercut, Canelo pummeled him with several body shots in round 8.
And Saunders knew it was only going to get worse.
That was a legit injury, and the doc would have stopped the fight eventually, but he could have continued until that would happen if he wanted to.
Saunders quit. Plain and simple.
If his corner didn't stop it the doctor would have.
Yer and end up with serious life threatening injuries or blindness.
People fight through injuries all the time. Fighting with a broken orbital bone is actually not uncommon at all. It happens. But he wasn't knocked out. He still had a chance to fight back certainly. We've seen dramatic turn arounds so many times in boxing. He shouldve fought on.

He clearly took a thumb to his eye.
Ah! I was hoping the "thumb" would surface. It took ten posts - not bad.
I'm a traditionalist and a good old 'I got thumbed" excuse gladens my old bones.
Nothing ever really changes just the date.
"He got thumbed" - thanks
