A question that has been asked to Arum multiple of times and one plenty over the years have wondered, why no big promotional company puts on major fights in Florida? Arum has simply responded that it is NOT a boxing town. Well, yesterday you had the biggest star in the sport fighting in Miami and while I'm sure it did solid numbers, the stadium was not buzzing or alive like his other fights. Sure the opponent was largely unknown, but look at what he just did against another unknown in Callum Smith on a short notice. San Antonio was live all fight and the fans were going crazy. You even had Charlo talking about the lack of atmosphere yesterday and saying it didn't do close to a sellout.
Basically, while fans are allowed in Florida, I don't think you should expect many more cards taking place there. Boxing is just a hard sell there it seems like.
This wasn't just about Miami, but Florida in general. Florida is a top 4 populated state in the country with no state tax yet no big promoter puts fights there.
I'm not even sure why you are bringing up other cities? I think you took this completely the wrong way. Go re-read my original post and my posts in this thread.
Yeah that's my point bro: If a city is not one of the top-ten most populated cities in the country, a city with a large Mexican-American demographic, or a place where a fighter is a big draw in his hometown (Devon Alexander in St Louis, Bud Crawford in Omaha), the fight is going to do poorly. Nowhere in America is a big fight town except Vegas, NYC, AC, Chicago and the major cities in in TX and SoCal.
Even the UFC, who try to take their fights on the road as much as possible to promote the brand, still end up doing virtually all their fights in a handful of cities. Check out this list of all UFC events by city below...
Bro your focus on Miami is bizarre.
Miami is a tiny-ass city. Its the 48th largest city in the US. Oklahoma City has 50% larger population than Miami. Omaha has more people than Miami. So does Louisville.
I'd say Miami gets far more boxing events than it should have over the years because Don liked to do shows there.
Why have promoters been avoiding putting on fights in Oklahoma City?
Why have promoters been avoiding putting on fights in Raleigh?
Why have promoters been avoiding putting on fights in Colorado Springs?
Why have promoters been avoiding putting on fights in Milwaukee?
All these places have a larger population than Miami.

Fyi, just got an e-mail back from the Florida commission and they do not release gate receipts "as they are exempted from public records disclosure pursuant to Chapter 548.062, Florida Statutes."
So yeah, we will likely never know the real numbers unless Matchroom leaks or releases them....Which is not going to happen.
It was a sellout based on the number of seats they made available. According to Chris Mannix anyway...do you think he was lying?
Sellout is such a vague, nebulous term in terms of attendance. Many times the tickets ARE bought and accounted for(By the promters, 3rd party ticket brokers, Scalpers, whomever). That doesn't mean that, that amount of butts were actually physically in those seats. Just means that someone down the line actually paid for a seat.
That's good to hear.
Yeah, if it really did sell out then that can open up more Miami shows down the line. Let's see if the BJS fight takes place in Miami as well.
trust me I envy you boxing fans out in the west coast and Texas, you guys always get the good fights. So many great fighters have fought in Miami and the crowds were weak. Mayweather fought Bruseles in front of 3k in a the Miami Heats arena, years before Trinidad and Roy Jones fought separate cards and it was sold out.
Canelo sells and I got to respect him for that. He sold out the event and it was good to see the boxing community and the casuals come out. Never seen so many Mexican women in prom style dresses haha. Everybody I took had a blast out there and they didn’t give a fuck who Canelo fought they were trying to get panocha
I bet nightclubs & alcohol stores are doing well.
Is weed legal in FL yet? That might chill them out a bit if not & it eventually is. But if its already there FL is just fooked I think.
It passed medicinal on 2016. Not sure if they voted on recreational.
I was there on Saturday night and the event was sold out, definitely 15k fans were in attendance. The issue is it’s a 70k football stadium so 15k looks like there was nobody there and also they turned down the lights. So many Mexican fans and so many fine ass chicks at the fight. I don’t know why but everybody ****s on Miami when it comes to sports events haha
That Hard Rock stadium is a party house during the undercards everybody was getting smashed and coked up out of their minds in the clubs and bars they have there, yes in the stadium there are actual clubs that you can party in and watch the events. If you never been there you wouldn’t understand. Some crappy old San Antonio Alamo arena doesn’t have the same luxuries and your stuck at just watching the fights.
I thought it was empty at first when I noticed the upper deck was full but the lower bowl and field seats were empty. Once canelo was about to fight all of the field seats were full from all the fans who were partying. Looks can be deceiving it was a great event and don’t be surprised if Canelo fights Saunders here in May. Miami is a international city and San Antonio una mierda
That's good to hear.

people showed up half way though the second quarter to watch lebron james and dwayne wade in their primes. you think they're going to show up on time and be excited about watching canelo fight an absolute tomato can??? florida isn't just a shitty sports town, it's a shitty town in general. unless you sell cocaine or pussy i can't think of an earthly reason to live down there.
Florida is supposedly ass for most entertainment the way I hear it. I think Disneyland does well doe. But thats probably a high % of tourists there.
Yeah but there’s only one of those lol. And I think you’re right, can’t think of anyone who lives in Florida going there
I thought this would be about the two random guys that somehow got in the ring unnoticed and stood by Canelo during post fight. Big security issue there. Those could have been two criminals trying to harm Canelo. I’d be surprised if Canelo’s team didn’t seek more info on how that happened and where were the security guards.
As far as the crowd goes, they were about as live as you can get in a match between a P4P #1 superstar and a complete unknown no-hoper who was doing absolutely nothing. It takes two. Look at Pacquiao vs Clottey. The fans can’t force themselves to be hyped up in a one-sided beatdown.

Idk man, I read a lot of youtube comments and Canelo did well with the whole Latino community. A lot of Colombians and Puerto Ricans were giving props like Ive never seen before.
Considering Canelo was fighting a nobody they were able to get the max attendance in there along with a host of big names from PBC, Top Rank, DAZN, etc that were all there to see Canelo fight. Without Covid restrictions and a better opponent I can't imagine they wouldn't have been able to pack 40K here. South Fl isn't a Boxing town like Philly, NY, etc BUT people come out for big fights. Also adding, the taxes here make it hella cheap to host a fight (much cheaper than NY). The only thing South FL doesn't have going for itself is the lack of Casinos (that don't include Jai-Alai). Orlando & Tampa have bigger Puerto Rican communities but South FL in a whole for BIG fights would still be a bigger outing. I don't think we've seen the last of fights being hosted down here.
Good point on how much cheaper it would be to put on the fights there.
But I guess it comes down to if they really did sell the full capacity of tickets. I'm not sure if they did. If so, then obviously the event was successful and this thread can be disregarded and maybe more promoters need to put on cards there.

Bro, they're just dumb as ****. If you're doing a show, dgaf what type, and you want asses in seats, you bring that **** to central florida not ****ing south florida. Maybe it's because I live here, but, I feel like that's a well known aspect of Florida everyone around the whole planet knows.
Let me put it you like this. If you were holding a rasslin event would you put it in Key West or Tampa-Orlando area? The Key is famous, nice, loads of people, but, not a ****ing place for a goddamn stadium event.
There's like two or three down there and like 15 between Tampa and Orlando alone. No one but the ****ing Marlins and bands go to south Florida. Too far from Disney.
Ah, that makes more sense. Maybe Tampa or Orlando is the place to try to put on a boxing event. Only Canelo and a select few can pull off bringing in a good crowd in Miami.
Due to "Miami's Nightlife" and it is so much you can do in Miami, yeah Boxing is a VERY tough to market on a Saturday Night In Miami because of the Alternative options that are available
I've heard a lot of folks in entertainment say fans are different in Florida. They just aren't into sh^t the same basically. Idk why it'd be any different there myself, but lotsa folks say similar sh^t like that. Rogan has said jokingly something to the effect of they are coked up so got ADHD or some such sh^t iirc.
Florida is ass for sports in general. I constantly see (pre covid) their baseball, hockey and basketball games with insane amounts of empty seats.
Were you in attendance? Simple question. If you weren’t then why are you always pushing this whole Texas/San Antonio thing?
if your thread didn’t interest me then I would stay the hell out of it. It obviously does, hence why am in it to ask why you are always pushing the Texas narrative, I actually thought you were at this fight, sampled in the atmosphere and didn’t feel the 15k people that was in attendance.
Funny that I heard Jermell Charlo complaining about the atmosphere but he was IN attendance. So maybe you are Jermell?
Was I at the fight? No, I was not.
Always pushing Texas/San Antonio for what exactly? When have I pushed that?
But anyways, it's all good. Really nothing more needs to be said here.
