4 Years Ago Today: Broner's last win

I don't know what dirt he has on Stephen Espinoza but they keep giving this kid a platform despite beating absolutely nobody of note I think just because of his personality and controversy that he brings. It makes good tv and the people tune in for that. He may be a dick, he may have no won in a while, but he's entertaining and that's good enough for Showtime.

Young Broner had a size advantage in almost all his fights so he looked great not having to worry about getting caught. Once he moved up we saw who he really is. He’s like an old quarterback that needs a perfect pocket to get his. Once they feel some pressure they get gun shy and look pedestrian. Broner was a one trick pony. Weight bully his opponents and look slick against smaller slower guys. Once Maidana cracked that chin he was done.

I think the idea for Broner was to find a successor to Floyd. Hamon likely invested heavily in promoting AB as the next TBE. If you watch him fight, he is kind of deceptive - very flat footed, and shot shy when pressured. He has a decent chin and some defensive instincts as well as some pop, but it was his persona and hype that some folks bought into, not his actual ability as a boxer. AB was a showman who never really performed under the lights, he scrapped past Paulie FFS. Dancing like a monkey, pulling your shorts up and shaking your head does not make you an elite boxer.

How do people think Broner would fair at world level if he changed his style and became an aggressive fighter that throws a lot of punches? Looking back now at the Maidana fight, he showed a massive amount of heart to dig it out, and even cause Maidana quite a few problems in the second half of the fight. His performances against Garcia and Pac were absolutely garbage. Showing so little ambition to try and take the fight.

I had hopes for him despite looking terrible against Quintero and Ponce De Leon. Gave him the benefit of the doubt. It wasn’t until he struggled to beat a washed up Pauli where I knew, this guys going no where. Same here man, I was on the hype train after the De Marco win but when he struggled with Paulie I saw major warning signs. He definitely should have went back down to 135 or to 140 after the Malignaggi fight. I actually backed Maidana by stoppage at 7/1, I thought I’d pulled off a master-stroke in that second round. Fair play to Broner though, he showed real toughness I didn’t think he had that night.
