Larry Holmes has a permanent lump on his head that he says is a result of the Shaver's punch that put him down. I think that is probably a bone tissue scar.
I was hit by both men.
Shavers shots were harder, but Tyson's shots hurt your feelings more.
He would hurl out obscenities and scream sacrilegious blasphemies everytime he landed a shot.
I never considered Tyson to be a monstrous puncher in terms of one punch power. No doubt he could end the fight in one shot if he landed fight, but that goes for most good punchers at heavyweight.
I put him among the best punchers in HW history due to to his variety, punch selection, combinations, finishing etc. But I don’t think he’s right up there in terms of raw power.
How did that turn out for them?
Exactly how you’d imagine. :lol1:
Earnie was well in to his 50’s at that point as well. Very nice fella tbf as long as you weren’t causing trouble, I used to always tell him he let Holmes off the hook in round 7. :lol1:
If really Shavers hit the hardest in history then Larry Holmes must have had the best chin in history. This was just incredible to watch. Everyone else should have been in coma for hours and yet he managed to stand up and ultimately won the fight against Shavers.
yes. And foreman hit harder too. Tyson hit hard, but he was quick with his punches. Foremand and Shavers were slower, but when they landed clean, dances or knockdowns regularly occurred.
I have no way to know for sure but I think Tyson hit harder with a larger variety of punches with both hands and was far more successful. Shavers was mainly known for a straight right and no other type of punch. Nobody ever raved about Shavers's left hook or right uppercut for instance. Tyson in contrast was a known bomber with all the different types of punches that can be thrown with either hand.
