Devin Haney hasn’t had a tough fight, so for the WBC to mandate that he steps it up after gifting him a belt sounds pretty fair. He had two title defenses against a 12-0 unknown fighter and against Gamboa, who was coming off an injury.
To discredit Teo as a champion for the WBC is ridiculous. The WBC franchise title I believe is intended to work the same way as the WBA Super title because the champ doesn’t have “mandatories,” but can fight someone in the top ten in either sanctioning body.
Max Kellerman explained it well. These “Super” or “franchise” titles are so that fighters with multiple belts can manage them better since it becomes almost impossible to fight every mandatory for every sanctioning body. This allows for the “unified” or “undisputed” champ to pick a ranked opponent to defend the titles. I think it would be unfair if Haney got another Gamboa-like opponent.
Teofimo paid his dues though, so him having to fight mandatories as a unified champ isn’t really unfair because his track record so far shows us that he doesn’t take soft touches, even if he had the option to. He beat Nakatani, who has now proven to be good, Richard Commey, and Lomachenko. I know he wanted to fight the Ramirez/Taylor winner, but he needs an in between fight due to the timing issue. If he manages to land a $10M fight with Kambosos, that’s not so much of a soft touch as the ones Haney has been given. In fact, if the roles were reversed and Haney chose to fight Kambosos, that would be his best opponent to date.
This thread is extremely biased.
If you’re upset Haney hasn’t fought anyone you are purposely forgetting Haney should’ve had a a fight with Loma before Loma fought Teo.
Just make the mando defense and then there is nothing to discuss.
The day that too fighters say, “I’m not paying 3% of my purse fir these worthless trinkets”, they will go away. But that never will happen. 6 GODDAMN BELTS PER WEIGHT CLASS!!!!!!
I’m not saying anything about rushing these fighters, but Haney does need to step it up or drop the belt. People think it’s unfair for him to have mandatories, but Teofimo doesn’t have any with the WBC. Teo beat the man to be the man at 135. He put himself in that position and I don’t see Teofimo taking any soft touches.
Agree 1000%

I'm not going to hold Teofimo responsible for Mauricio Sulaiman Confusing BS Franchise Stuff! He Beat "The Man" in the Division so yeah that makes him the man to beat now true
People need to Calm The F^CK Down! Devin Haney 22, Teofimo Lopez 23, Ryan Garcia 22, Tank Davis just turned 26 last month, Shakur Stevenson 23...WTF is the rush trying to throw all these young guys in with each other already when honestly some of these fighters are not even big fights yet and still need to be built up. Yet we have fans acting like these guys are old and running out of time and feel they all need to fight immediately. No need to rush anything regardless if it is at 135, 140 or as high as 147 where all of these guys will likely Max Out at...They All Will Fight!
All that being said...Fortuna is a excellent opponent for Haney! The Winner of Campbell vs Garcia will likely be looking for a shot at Teofimo or Tank Davis, not really Haney so that leaves really just Fortuna for Haney for now

who cares about all this race argument. Haney has fought no one with a pulse . He should have to fight Fortuna who has waited gis time and fought his way up. I say he should atleast have to fight Fortuna, who is better than anyone he has fought. However, Fortuna isnt a world beater either.
The media favors African American fighters they really don’t have to accomplish anything yet they’re quick to move them to the p4p list ala Crawford and Spence if they were Hispanic they would have to do double the work.
So it's favoritism to have 2 blacks on the P4P list? Lol.Yet Loma is still hanging around with 2 losses.
I feel like they're accommodating their Hispanic fighters with the whole franchise foolishness. I'm ok with Haney_Garcia but he's already saying he only wants Tank not Haney so who knows.
WBC is protecting their franchise champs, that's why.
Those mandatories are there as a way to put hurdles, and we all know that ryan garcia won't fight haney if he beats cambell. Haney has expressed interest to fight teofimo, we already know that. Teofimo acquired lomachenko's diva attitude and lies after beating him.
The WBC was pretty clear on how the franchise champion thing was supposed to work.
It was non transferable and recognition of a fighter's standing in the sport.
Then as soon as one lost they changed everything!
It's a nonsense title. And this has nothing to do with discrediting Teo. It's to do with discrediting the WBC.
Right, if the WBC was firm on how the belt worked at the beginning, there would be no question. I think the belt is not transferable, but a fighter can petition for it as long as the WBC approves.
Loma skipped Devin because he wanted to go straight for the IBF belt without wasting time to become undisputed. Haney fans are taking it as if Loma was forced to vacate due to failure of fighting a mandatory, but that’s not the case. Loma was playing politics and Teofimo is now facing the questions and backlash because they think that Haney’s belt has more honor to it, even if he didn’t fight for it.
