Stationary or did like to keep the fight in the middle of the ring. He had this subtle half of step back with a hook right away or a right hand. It is in an angle so most miss it. You can say that he was creating punching space but it was also part of his defensive move.
Yes stationary. His feet were predominantly stationary and slow.
Toney fought best when someone was in front of him so he could slip and use his defense and counter. Where the fight was depended on his opponent more more so than him.
He rarely moved backwards because his feet are slow, he obviously threw good counter punches, usually from a stationary position. He’s not even in the discussion for being near the top for fighters who landed great punches moving backwards.
Most people were amazed with Sweetpeas head movement but his feet/legs set everything up. His feet were so fast and his knees were always bent. Such a strong base.
Toney was stationary for his whole career.

Whitaker and James Toney are the best fighters that I have ever seen that can punch while backing up.
Sweat Pea was a master backfoot boxer, I would add Wilfred Benitez and Salvador Sanchez as well.
He knocked out a fighter going backwards. Toney became a slob as his career went and became more stationary.
Toney was stationary for his whole career.
Are you familiar with the OG, Big Daddy Kane?
I am indeed and I assume that’s the song in the video and probably why I should have watched it before commenting :lol1:
Hey now, don't forget the double OG Aretha!!

I think should watch more fights if you think James Toney is the best fighter you’ve seen throwing punches while stepping backwards because that’s not something he’s overly good at.

I remember when Oscar De La Hoya wiped the ring up with him and chased him back to the glass dick. He was pretty good at avoiding fights in the ring though.

Beat Chavez and Oscar clean. Right there is the filthy side of boxing.
I think that the Oscar fight was really close but I scored it for Sweat Pea, the Chavez fight was a straight robbery tho, the same for the Ramirez fight.
