Bankrupt themselves? Is that a joke? Do you know who owns DAZN? They aren't bankrupting themselves anytime soon. And DAZN has lost a lot of subscribers during the pandemic and only one fighter can bring them back.
The owner is losing money hand over fist on this venture and is looking at possibly selling.
Makes more sense than to keep paying out more than you are taking in. Presently sports aren’t bringing in a lot of money, if Canelo doesn’t like it then he should wait it out.
Nobody should be expected to bankrupt themselves because the princess feels she is above the world’s problems.

If DAZN wants a good match up then they have to pay up, simple as that. Knowing that Smith wants five or six million, then know you will have to pay a little more than you usually do.
To antagonize your lone draw makes no damn sense.

I dont think theyre directly telling him to take a pay cut. I think the issue is DAZN arent giving GBP more than $40mil for the card, but then they arent going to approve a Quigley to make the budget work. Smith will get approved but thats $5/6mil, and blows the budget, gate revenue would have covered the discrepancy.
Brings it to loggerheads

Here's what makes no sense. DAZN just acquired rights to BKB stateside and then the soccer league in Germany. So why should Canelo take a pay cut here when he is responsible for DAZN USA? The lack of gate revenue here does not fly at all. Canelo shouldn't be talking any pay cut.

DAZN gets a cut of Canelo's gate? No, they do not. That's his promoter's revenue and cut of the event. It's Golden Boy Promotions obligation to sell live gate tickets for his cards not DAZN. While Ginger receives a percentage of that cut.

Either Canelo take this fight on shorts or risk DAZN going completely and permanently out of business. It's his choice. They are in near financial ruin and could use a loan to seriously pay off their debts.
Canelo understands the current climate we are living in. Without a live gate DAZN doesn't stand a chance of matching his guarantee.
The upside of this is it's only temporary and he is still working and has a job. That's more than what 40 million Americans can say.
Well said, i agree
I thought he was taking a paycut?
He is.
But none of his more attractive opponents seem to want to take a paycut.
Instead they want career high paydays.
You're right. However, I just wonder how many subscribers do DAZN have remaining to help pay Canelo's guarantee with so many boxing fans worldwide being either unemployed or furloughed? I know I allowed mine to expire back in April without renewing it. $100 is lot to ask of boxing fans during this pandemic.
you would have to think that DAZN knew the deal was a loser overall, basically a loss-leader to expose the US audience to their product. I suppose they could be dumb enough to think they would turn a profit on Canelos deal, but if they actually thought that, then maybe they need new leadership.......
Edit: On 2nd thought, perhaps it wasnt so far fetched an idea. Assume Canelo fights 2x a year, thats a $70 million outlay for DAZN. If Canelo drives a million subs a year (not an unreasonable goal), thats $100 million annually in revenue, less the production expenses. They key is that those have to be annual subs though, and not just monthly buys in the 2 months that he fights.....

If DAZN goes out of business, that would make Canelo a free agent. That is probably a good thing for Canelo. The sooner he gets free from DAZN and Golden Boy the better. He can either promote his own fights, perhaps in partnership with another promoter, or sign outright with one of the major promotion companies. There are plenty of others who would pay big bucks to secure Canelo's services and his brand. I must say that I had high hopes for DAZN, but they seem to run by dolts.
No fans means no live gate. Throw in the fact that his last 3 opponents werent exactly names or killers and you should understand why dazn doest want to pay him that much. His next opponent isnt a household name or ko artist either
DAZN only owns Canelos broadcast rights. Why would they give a ***** about the live gate? Thats Golden Boys problem, not theirs.......
:) ... yes, right... but GBP has to pay the opponent's purse (which actually results from the live gate revenue, I guess)... :)

I'll never understand just why ODLH and Canelo rushed into doing business with some shady Ukrainians... :)
