The UFC doesn't make excuses about the pandemic. They just get to work and draw good ratings on the same channel that Top Rank is floundering on.
I can't even argue against that.
Welp.......

Would you be even the slightest in understanding due to the current pandemic?
No.
The pandemic means more people are having to stay home. And they are desperate for live sports.
Top Rank's ratings on ESPN have been consistently awful.
If I was paying them to promote my name and my image and my fights I would be severely disappointed right about now.

If a promoter does all this then what's the point of a manager?
Well the manager is basically a go-between between a fighter and promoter, and if a fighter leaves the promoter, it will generally be the manager doing the business to get the best deal possible with another promoter.
The manager is basically the day-to-day person doing business on behalf of the fighter. Negotiations with trainers about fees and cost of training camp will go through the manager. Sponsorship deals will go through the manager and basically anything else.

Depends. Lower level scenes are pretty much dominated by managers who act as promoters. Think mini-Al Haymons. I'm talking local club fights, etc.
At the elite level? Managers are there to keep a promoter in check and ensure the fighters career isn't being utilized solely for the promoter's financial gain. Checks and balances. It's why the Ali act prevented Al Haymon from becoming a promoter. Because then he'd have complete control over a fighters career as their manager & promoter. A fighter would be at the mercy of his every whim. And thats just theory because Al don't operate like that. But a manger is the House of Representatives to a promoter's Senate.
Theoretically but we all know that’s not the truth. Is Shawn Porter or Terrance Crawford going to do all the legwork that goes into setting up an event, such as locking down arenas- cable distribution deals- paying the undercard fighters- handling the state boxing commissions etc...??? You expect promoters to handle all that, still finance the event and take less money? Would never happen in a million years.
They "work" for fighters in the way Record Labels "work" for artists. Promoters put up all the money, take all the risk, handle all the tiresome business stuff, market the fighters, etc etc
Every now n then there's a fighter that gets so big the Promoter is at his mercy- but thats no different an artist getting so big the Label is at his mercy. Like say a Drake- Universal's Top Exec already said Drake does whatever he wants and can get whatever deal he wants. Drake just has to talk and universal will put it in ink.
That's the type of power Canelo has rn.

People are desperate for sports entertainment. Did you see how many viewers the Last Dance documentary got on ESPN?
Well yeah it's a MICHAEL JORDAN documentary & Basketball is a drastically bigger and more popular sport in America than Boxing. I wouldn't have expected anything else. It holds no merit on what I previously wrote.
Bob Arum gets paid to promote. The numbers for these fights have been abysmal, so whatever cut of the money he is getting he is not earning it. In my opinion.
Can't argue against opinion.
Well plenty of law and regulations made that extremely hard to accomplish: without either a lot of money to throw around aka huge budget or, a monopoly of your sport.

The pandemic is causing people to stay home more than usual. And they are desperate for some sports content.
Seems to me like a good promoter should have found a way to promote these fights to that captive audience.
Instead Top Rank is getting abysmal ratings. Dana White is even laughing at Arum and calling him a d-ckhead as a result.

Arum has neither. I'd expect the ratings to be low because there really wasn't any sports for the longest. Out of sight, out of mind. That phrase exists for a reason. Yearly ratings have shown PBC at 1st. UFC at 2nd. TR at 3rd. There's been a gap between TR and UFC. That was before the pandemic. I'd imagine viewership DID get worse. Dana has two advantages in this situation Bob doesn't have- 3 if we count arguably the most important. 1) Dana has a monopoly over MMA in America. So his viewership will always guaranteed and when fans are starving for mma they know where to look. 2) Dana has a huge budget to play with which leads to privatized islands purely for events. Self explanatory. 3) Because of the first two- it lead to the last which is Dana has ALL the biggest stars in MMA under the UFC brand.
Arum has NONE of that. He has No BIG stars under Top Rank. He doesn't have a huge budget to play and experiment with. He doesn't have a monopoly on Boxing in America. Dana is just talking. Its entertaining to some I'm sure but its just lip running.
Well most of your question can Be disarmed merely by stating that the pandemic disrupted most industries on earth. So there wasn't any real merit in asking. We know about Bud because of TR though, core fans I mean. Even if the masses don't. As far as what have TR done for Bud? They pay Bud over $3 mil a fight. Bud isn't a huge draw by far, so thats more than enough IMO. They are treating Bud fairly so fair- Bud could've gone somewhere else but he chose to re-sign. You'd have a better chance arguing why did Bud re-sign than asking your initial question.

How exactly is Top Rank marketing the fighters right now? There are no tickets to sell and they obviously aren't doing a good job of attracting eyeballs to these fights.

They make whatever they make. They put on the entire show and pay for everything. Nobody pays them. They make their money on fanless fights with ty and endless commercials. I never watch a top rank fight live because they have ten minutes of commercials and other bs for every minute of fighting. when I tape it I can fast forward through all the BS and watch the tiny amount of actual boxing they show.
Can you blame them? They have bills/goals/wants/needs/financial dreams/etc just like fighters do...Difference is Promoters only make money after the event is done and all expenses are paid. They pocket what's left. They need to make something in order to keep the company floating as well feed themselves, AND continue climbing the financial ladder.
